What is communication?

At its foundation, communication focuses on how people use messages to generate meanings within and across various contexts. It is the discipline that studies all forms, modes, media, and consequences of communication through humanistic, social scientific, and aesthetic inquiry. - National Communication Association.

Minor in Communication Studies

A minor in Communication Studies provides foundational skills in human interaction, persuasion, and message creation across various platforms, complementing any major by teaching you how to connect effectively in personal, professional, and public settings, covering topics from interpersonal dynamics and public speaking to media literacy and organizational communication.

You can earn this minor by taking classes in person, in a hybrid format, or completely online.

  • CMCL-C 122 Interpersonal Communication (3 cr)
  • CMCL-C 205 Introduction to Communication and Culture (3 cr)
  • Students will take any two of the following courses at the 200-300 level (6 cr):
    • CMCL-C 225 Discussion & Decision Making
    • CMCL-C 304 Communication & Social Conflict
    • CMCL-C 307 Health Communication
    • CMCL-C 315 Advertising and Consumer Culture
    • CMCL-C 334 Current Topics in Communication
    • CMCL-C 337 New Media
    • CMCL-C 380 Nonverbal Communication
    • JOUR-J 210 Visual Communication
    • JOUR-J 219 Introduction to Public Relations
    • SPCH-S 303 Propaganda and Persuasion
    • SPCH-S 323 Speech Composition
    • SPCH-S 333 Public Relations
    • Any 200 or 300 level CMCL, SPCH, or JOUR course not listed above and approved by your advisor may also count towards fulfilling this requirement.
  • Students will take two additional courses at the 400 level:
    • CMCL-C 405 Communication Theories
    • CMCL-C 407 Rhetoric & History
    • CMCL-C 424 Communication Research Methods
    • CMCL-C 427 Cross-Cultural Communication
    • CMCL-C 440 Organizational Communication
    • CMCL-C 450 Gender and Communication

Any 400 level CMCL, SPCH, or JOUR course not listed above and approved by your advisor may also count towards fulfilling this requirement.

Microcredentials

Communication skills are continuously cited by employers across industries and disciplines as the number one thing graduates need to succeed. IU East offers two microcredentials in Communication Studies to enhance your professional capabilities.

Professional Speaking

The importance of oral communication is often emphasized as a required skill by employers. Students who earn the Professional Speaking microcredential will develop public speaking skills that meet the needs of employers.

Language and Intercultural Communication

This microcredential is focused on validating skills in communicating across cultures, blending linguistic proficiency with cultural awareness to prepare individuals for global environments.
