The School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics offers several minors to complement your major field of study.
Choose from the following fields of study to add another dimension to your education:
The biology minor covers a comprehensive understanding of the major areas of biology, practice in laboratory methods and critical-thinking skills, and knowledge about areas where biology is likely to affect your everyday life.
The minor in biology requires 18 credit hours of coursework; at least 8 credit hours must be completed on the IU East campus. All courses for the minor must be completed with a grade of C or better.
Successful completion of BIOL-L102–Intro to Biological Science 2 is required before enrolling in other biology courses.
The minor in chemistry is designed to encourage accurate, systematic observations and the development of deductive reasoning. You will learn concepts in general and organic chemistry as well as experimental techniques in one or more areas of chemistry.
The minor in chemistry requires completion, with a C or better, of 20 credit hours including the core courses listed in the course catalog. At least 10 hours must be at the 200 level or above, and 8 hours or more of minor courses must be completed at IU East.
The minor in environmental studies is a coordinated, interdisciplinary program designed to enhance your awareness of major environmental concepts, acquaint you with areas where environmental issues are related to other disciplines, and increase your awareness of ways people affect the biosphere.
The program requires 18 credit hours, including at least 6 credit hours at the 200 level or above. It must include courses from at least one division other than Natural Sciences and Mathematics.
At least 8 credit hours of the minor must be completed at IU East.
The Minor in Mathematics is a program consisting of 16 credit hours of undergraduate credit in mathematics.
The purpose of a minor in mathematics is to provide non-math major students with the opportunity to enhance their career with a strong background in quantitative skills and strengthen the credentials of students who want to go to graduate school or into the job market.
In particular, a minor in mathematics provides you with a formal recognition of the strength of your quantitative knowledge beyond the requirements of your major.
The Minor in Neuroscience is a collaborative, interdisciplinary program that addresses the basics of neuroscience with emphasis on biology and psychology.
This minor provides a strong and broad background, offering students the opportunity to pursue advanced degrees in areas relating to neuroscience (e.g., neurobiology, neuropsychology, neuropharmacology, drug rehabilitation, neurophysiology, psychiatry) or in professional schools.
This minor is jointly offered by the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSM) and School of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS).
