Hey guys!
After the long 16 hour car ride through Illinois, Missouri and Oklahoma, I finally made it to Waco! Waco is about an hour and a half south of Dallas. My father is originally from Waco, so it is nice to get to explore where he grew up! It’s also nice being able to live with my great aunt and uncle and get to know them better.
Being here has been so exciting already and I haven’t even had my first official day at the zoo! I’ve already made so many great friends, been eaten alive by bugs, and listened to more country music than a person can imagine. The heat of the summer hasn’t really set in down here just yet, so its a nice 80-85 degrees on average. Keep me in your thoughts as the summer goes on and the temperature goes up to 115. Lots of sunscreen will be used!
I had my orientation at the zoo yesterday, and my first official day starts tomorrow. Cameron Park Zoo is a smaller zoo, only 52 acres with roughly 1,700 animals from 300 different species. I learned the rules of the machinery, dress code, which animals not to share space with, and who I would be working with at orientation. Come to find out, at some point in the summer one of my jobs will be to sit in an enclosure with four coyote pups! My internship allows me to work in the four different sections of the Mammal Department at the zoo. I rotate every three weeks for a total of 12 weeks.
Find out next week more about my first week at the zoo. First up elephants!
