Interns: Involvement and Empowerment!

Interns: Involvement and Empowerment!

Want to use your talents and interests while also learning new skills and receiving un-ending gratitude? Think about being a library intern!  An internship is a mutually beneficial arrangement.  The undergraduate or graduate student can:

  • learn new skills helpful for future employment
  • use unique talents and strengths to make a lasting contribution to the Campus
  • increase professional contacts
  • enhance a resume
  • experience personal and professional growth
  • meet interesting people

In the past two years the Campus Library has hosted five interns, with a sixth starting for Fall 2011. Each intern has had a significant impact on library resources or services. Thanks to these interns, the Library is improved and enhanced in many ways, such as:

  1. Debra White developed an easy-to-manage accounting system
  2. Sarah Morey helped re-design the library website and was an instructor for the Early College program
  3. Joe Augustin researched creative resources to use in mythology and other courses
  4. Sara Wilhoite co-created an “Amazing Race: Library edition” program and helped design the Library Living Room
  5. Sarah Gilchrist co-designed and painted the new Reference Center and represented the Library for a presentation at a national library conference
  6. ELS interns created “Connections Kits,” thematic literacy bags to help local youth improve and enjoy reading

A library is more than books. We have opportunities for marketing, art and interior design, social media reference, video production, archival work, reference and instruction, prek-12 literacy, and event planning, to name just a few.  Whatever your interests or talents, we would like to talk with you about helping to make your campus library the best that it can be.

It’s not too late!  Contact Frances Yates fyates@iue.edu or Patty Crawford pajames@iue.edu to schedule an information interview.
