What Doors Will Your Degree Open?

With graduation less than two months away, many of you are probably looking into where you will work and what you will do in your new career. Not to say you haven’t been career focused before – internships, service-learning placements, classes and work-study jobs have probably all helped shape your career goals at one time or another over the past few years. But maybe you need a good contact in your chosen field – and that can be the key piece that helps you obtain the fulfilling job you want.

Fortunately, there are plenty of opportunities to get your foot in the door. And this month includes a great prospect – the 4 Colleges Career Fair will be Tuesday, March 28, from 3:00 – 6:00p.m. This year it’s at Earlham College (birthplace of IU East), in the Athletics and Wellness Center (long time Red Wolves fans will remember some of our home games being played there, before the opening of our new Student Events Center). The 4 Colleges Career Fair features dozens of employers and colleges scouting to place people with a newly minted college credential (whether it be a certificate, associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s degree) in jobs, internships, or graduate programs. Students from IU East, Ivy Tech, Earlham College and Purdue are all encouraged to attend. Registration is online at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/4-colleges-career-fair-tickets-29517580879 and for more information (or for help crafting your résumé) Sally Saydshoev, the Career & Internship Coordinator at Indiana University East, can be reached at ssaydsho@iue.edu or 765-973-8584.

But the library, too, offers help for students exploring their career options. Our Career Connections LibGuide offers guidance on each part of the job search, from writing your résumé to interview skills to alternative careers to running your own business; linking you with books, ebooks, videos, and websites. It is also a portal to other sites of interest – from IU East’s own Office of Career Planning and Placement to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook – a vital resource for gauging the potential earnings and working conditions of any career you’re hoping to become a part of. Even if you’re not a senior, there’s something here to help you!
