“Healthy IU” is a program that promotes wellness of faculty and staff. Recently they featured a “Common Good” project, to enhance our community of caring. Activities included the practice of gratitude. As we reflect on what we are grateful for at work, one of the first that comes to mind is student staff. Here at the IU East Campus Library we are fortunate to have exceptional students who work well to ensure we provide excellent service. They also work on a variety of special projects, from oral histories to research to academic enrichment programs. We appreciate each of our Fall 2017 student staff and want you to meet them!
Katelyn Groff
As an Elementary Education major in her third year at IU East, Katelyn values her time as a student library assistant because of the opportunities it provides to work on special projects. In her two years working in the Campus Library, Katelyn has assisted with Third Grade Academy, the Math Counts! tutoring program, and Herstory Camp. Her education major connects well with her work in helping to prepare resource guides, including literature for youth and women’s history. On a day to day basis, Katelyn helps students find books and also answers general questions. She enjoys meeting new people, and credits this job with enhancing her love of learning. Katelyn notes that “I enjoy coming to work because I know I will always learn new and interesting material!”
Brittany Yoder
This is Brittany’s third year working at the IU East Library. She has worked on many projects, but the largest one was indexing the student newspapers. It took many hours and a very large spreadsheet. Brittany has contributed to the documentation of IU East history in hopes that people will always know how our campus came to be and what it has become. She enjoys learning about new resources and meeting new people who come to the library. As a Communications major Brittany understands the importance of communication in everyday life. She is able to help people by providing information and values that “I bring people peace of mind that they can find services and materials they need for their studies.”
Dakota Firsich
Dakota is in her 2nd year and enjoys working at the front desk in the Campus Library. She had experience working in her high school library, so completing library tasks is familiar to her. Dakota enjoys helping people, learning new tasks, assisting with library displays, and special projects. Dakota works on archival projects and has contributed to the special faculty book, produced using scaler software, for the online campus history course. Her favorite project so far has been the digitization of content in the archives. She explains that “I really like organizing and arranging the materials.” Working at the Campus Library relates to Dakota’s goal of owning a business, so the customer service interactions are useful experiences to prepare for that.
Ashley Clayton
Ashley is a senior at IU East, majoring in history. She is working with the IU Bicentennial team as the Oral History Assistant at the IU East library. In this position, Ashley documents experiences of IU East alumni, staff, and faculty through interviews. As a history major, Ashley enjoys the opportunity to learn about so many stories from throughout IU East history. Her goal is that “I hope that these interviews not only portray the true impact that IU as a whole has had on so many people, but also how it has grown and built many different opportunities.” Ashley values meeting a variety of people and listening to their IU experiences.
Jennifer Haught
Jennifer is new to both IU East and the Bicentennial Oral History Project this semester. She is majoring in English, Technical and Professional Writing because “I love all things word-related and believe I could put that to use in a career.” Her love of writing and words is also one of the reasons she knew a transcriber position with the Oral History Project would be a great fit for her. As an Oral History Assistant, Jennifer contributes to the building of IU’s oral history archive, so future generations will know about the past. Jennifer shared that “I’m excited that I have been welcomed as a new addition to the team!”
