June is Pride Month, so we at the IU East Library want to make sure you are aware of all the resources the library has to offer on LGBTQ+ issues and topics. Listed below is one libguide and five databases that can help you get the most in-depth coverage on your research needs.
LGBTQ Resource Guide
This is a libguide created by IU East Library Instruction Coordinator KT Lowe. It provides a selection of academic research material, listing relevant journal titles and books that are accessible via the IU East Library. It also provides informative and practical resources for LGBTQ students, families, and allies. This guide provides links to various education-based, youth-specific, and political organizations. It also includes links to local resources on the IU East campus, including counseling services, resources on sexual discrimination and violence, and health. So, if you are looking for support or wanting to educate yourself on being a better ally, then check out the LGBTQ Resource libguide at https://iue.libguides.com/LGBTQResources.
Archives of Sexuality & Gender: LGBTQ History and Culture
With material drawn from hundreds of institutions and organizations, including both major international activist organizations and local, grassroots groups, the documents in the Archives of Sexuality & Gender: LGBTQ History and Culture since 1940 present important aspects of LGBTQ life in the second half of the twentieth century and beyond. The archive illuminates the experiences not just of the LGBTQ community as a whole, but of individuals of different races, ethnicities, ages, religions, political orientations, and geographical locations that constitute this community. Historical records of political and social organizations founded by LGBTQ individuals are featured, as well as publications by and for lesbians and gays, and extensive coverage of governmental responses to the AIDS crisis. The archive also contains personal correspondence and interviews with numerous LGBTQ individuals, among others. The archive includes gay and lesbian newspapers from more than 35 countries, reports, policy statements, and other documents related to gay rights and health, including the worldwide impact of AIDS, materials tracing LGBTQ activism in Britain from 1950 through 1980, and more.
GenderWatch
GenderWatch is a full text database of over 175 periodicals and other publications that focus on how gender impacts a variety of subject areas. Publications include academic and scholarly journals, magazines, newspapers, newsletters, regional publications, books, booklets and pamphlets, conference proceedings, and government, and special reports.
AVON
Avon (Academic Video Online) is a multidisciplinary collection of videos that touches on the curriculum needs of virtually every department. You can browse by topic, including LGBT Studies, which contains 552 films on the topic.
CQ Researcher
CQ Researcher is noted for its in-depth, unbiased coverage of health, social trends, criminal justice, international affairs, education, the environment, technology, and the economy. This database has a section devoted to LGBT Rights and other related reports such as Transgender Rights and Gay Marriage. Each report has an extensive foot note section that can be valuable in finding and exploring other credible resources.
Opposing Viewpoints
This database is similar to CQ Researcher, as it includes topic overviews, but also provides a variety of resources like full-text magazines, academic journals, news articles, primary source documents, statistics, images, videos, audio files and links to vetted websites. Opposing Viewpoints also has its own sections on LGBTQ Rights and State Laws, LGBTQ Rights and Military Service, LGBTQ Parents, Transgender Rights, Same-Sex Marriage, and other broader issues like Human Rights, Civil Rights, Homelessness, and Street Teens.
