New Streaming Video Platform for Your Courses: Kanopy now LIVE!

Films can be a useful supplemental resource for many lessons or courses and the IU East Campus Library continuously works to provide easy, comprehensive access to streaming films for educational purposes.  Starting in January 2020, the library now has an agreement with the online streaming video platform Kanopy.

Kanopy is a video streaming solution offering access to more than 30,000 documentaries, movies, and educational videos from thousands of producers such as Criterion Collection, PBS, Great Courses, Kino Lorber and more. The IU East Campus Library currently has the documentary film category open and available for instant viewing. Faculty who are looking for a documentary film to stream for their classes can check Kanopy (http://iue.libguides.com/A-ZList/K) and easily provide online streaming access to their students, whether in person or online.

Some of the benefits for faculty to use Kanopy are:

  • Strategically acquire high-use films: Triggering a film requires 4 independent plays by users within 12 months (the average triggered film is watched over 50 times)
  • Enjoy low-use films free: films can be watched up to 4 times for free allowing us to support some campus/class showings, research, etc. for free (on average, 20 films are watched for each 1 film triggered)
  • Films automatically set with public performance rights, so good for online classes, student clubs and group showings
  • Films can be embedded in Canvas and viewed simultaneously by multiple users at once
  • Faculty can easily create playlist of either films or film clips, depending on their needs

Films viewed more than 4 times are automatically purchased with a one-year streaming license. The library does have a budget cap on how many films we can purchase, so please note that free viewing of content may be temporary suspended if we reach that limit. We also only have the documentaries genre currently open and films that fall outside that genre will need to be requested first, if needed for a class.

Kanopy offers a lot of great content and up-to-date documentary films, but it doesn’t have every film available, so if you cannot find the film you’re looking for in this platform, please contact Assistant Librarian of Access & Technical Services Beth South at eabrockm@iue.edu for vendor information and pricing.

While Kanopy offers a lot of new and current documentaries and feature films, the IU East Library also subscribes to AVON (Academic Video Online). AVON is a multidisciplinary collection of videos that can meet a variety of curricular needs, such as counseling and therapy, dance, music, theatre, ethnographic studies, environmental studies, nursing, and education. They offer thousands of titles available now and 400 new titles added per month. AVON can be accessed from our A-Z List at http://iue.libguides.com/A-ZList/A.

Once again, if there is a film you’re interested in showing for your class and you’re not sure if we have it or how to get it, contact Beth South at eabrockm@iue.edu. If you’re looking for film to use in your research or have any questions about a research topic, just Ask Us! iueref@iue.edu.
