eBooks
There are several databases that are currently offering free access to thousands of eBooks. For instance, from now until end of July, the De Gruyter database provides free access to 600 Journals and 2000 eBooks pertaining to science and the humanities.
Currently through Project Muse, Getty’s open access titles now available include Keep It Moving, an account of twentieth-century kinetic art and its major developments in the 1950s and 1960s. Other OA titles include Ancient Terracottas from South Italy and Sicily in the J. Paul Getty Museum and Values in Heritage Management: Emerging Approaches and Research Directions.
The University of Michigan Press is extending their free-to-read access to all content in the University of Michigan Press eBook Collection (UMP EBC) until August 31, 2020. Example of titles include: Wrapped in Beauty: The Koelz Collection of Kashmiri Shawls, Hazel Scott: The Pioneering Journey of a Jazz Pianist, from Café Society to Hollywood to HUAC, and Acts of Poetry: American Poets’ Theater and the Politics of Performance.
Education
Are you taking classes this summer? Before you know it, those class projects will be due. Unsure of what publications will best serve your needs? Check out the Cabell’s Whitelist database. The Cabell’s Whitelist is an independent, curated database of scholarly journals that guides researchers to over 11,000 journals across 18 academic disciplines that might assist in their research.
June was LGBTQ Pride Month! Check out the open-access digital collections held in the Independent Voices database. These databases contain alternative press newspapers, magazines, and journals produced by various groups and individuals including LGBT activists. More resources, curated and organized for ease of access, are in the Campus Library LGBTQ libguide.
General Studies
Its summertime. Got any home improvement projects you want to work on? Check out the Home Improvement Reference Center database. The Home Improvement Reference Center is designed to assist homeowners in do-it-yourself projects, as well as educate about general upkeep, home maintenance and remodeling projects.
History
Uncover the inspiring voices of Native-Americans, African Americans, Women, the LGBT community, and other traditionally underrepresented groups in American History by checking out the March of Time database. The March of Time database has over 440 videos that allow you to discover the rare and previously unpublished American History content.
Want to learn about the linguistic, historical, and ethnic heritage of indigenous communities? Check out the open access Mesoamerican Archive database. Here you will find material from 1974-2007 focusing on various themes such as human rights, political violence, international relations, and Sandinismo.
Music
Want to explore the Indiana University Starr Sheet Music Collection? Good news! With the Sheet Music Consortium that brings together collections of sheet music from over 30 universities, the Library of Congress, and the National Library of Australia, you can view digitized sheet music from various genres and eras.
June was African American Music Appreciation Month! Research Ella Fitzgerald, Jimi Hendrix, and other great African American artist in the Garland Encyclopedia of World Music Online database. The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music Online database is a comprehensive online resource devoted to music research of all the world’s people.
Do you know the first place Louis Armstrong recorded his music? It was at Richmond’s own Gennett Studios. Jazz, Blues, Country, and Gospel artists who recorded there helped define American music for generations, and they continue to influence modern music on a global scale.
