Arts
African American Music is rich with variety. Learn more about musicians Nina Simone, Millie Jackson, Roberta Flack, and other great African American artists in the International Index to Music Periodicals database.
What do Harriet Hosmer, Edmonia Lewis, and Emma Stebbins have in common? They were famous neoclassical women sculptors from the mid-19th century. Learn more about them and their work, in the Oxford Art Online database. It contains more than 200,000 articles spanning ancient to contemporary art and architecture, as well as over 19,000 images of art, structures, plans, and more.
Diverse voices
The Black Studies Periodicals database covers an array of humanities-related disciplines including art, cultural criticism, economics, education, health, history, language and literature, law, philosophy, politics, religion, and sociology. Find information about artist Faith Ringgold, educator Rita Pierson, and sociologist Anna Julia Cooper as well as hundreds more in the Black Studies Periodical.
Find independent perspectives in an open access resource for alternative press newspapers, magazines, and journals produced by feminists, dissident GIs, campus radicals, Native Americans, anti-war activists, Black Power advocates, Hispanics, and LGBT activists. The Independent Voices database contains 19,675 issues comprising over 524,000 pages.
History
Needing resources that look at everyday experiences lived through English history, from 1500-1700? Early Modern England: Society, Culture, & Everyday Life 1500-1700 database documents working, family, religious, and administrative life experienced across England by ‘ordinary’ as well as prominent individuals and families.
On May 6, 2021, it had been 84 years since radio announcer Herb Morrison did his famous on-the-scene description declaring “oh, the humanity!” as he watched the 804-foot airship Hindenburg burst into flames killing 36 passengers on May 6, 1937. Important archives on the study of Social History in the Modern Era can be found in the Mass Observation Online database. The MOO has original manuscripts and transcripts, print publications, photographs, and interactive features that document the everyday life of ordinary people in Britain from 1937 through until the early 70’s.
Looking for U.S. women’s history resources from 1600-2000? The Women and Social Movements in the United States, 1600-2000 database contains over 4,800 publications including 130 document projects and teaching strategies ranging from agriculture and anthropology to transportation and war.
Where can you find travel and geographical information including maps and expedition reports, manuscripts, books, and photographs spanning more than 450 years? In the Royal Geographical Society. The RGS covers historical & cultural geography such as Colonial, Post-Colonial & Decolonization Studies; Environmental Degradation; Identity, Gender & Ethnic Studies; and Trade, Commerce, Law, and Policies relating to Colonization. The RGS is part of the Wiley Digital Archives.
Literature
Interested in children’s rare books, games, ephemera, and artwork from the 19th and early 20th century? The Children’s Literature and Culture database reveals the socio-cultural history of the times and examines how new concepts were introduced to young readers to encourage an engagement with the imagination.
Where can you find plays written by Amiri Baraka, Zora Neale Hurston, Randolph Edmonds, and more? The Black Drama database consists of more than 1,700 plays written from the mid-1800s to the present by more than 200 playwrights from North America, English-speaking Africa, the Caribbean, and other African diaspora countries. Over 40% of the collections consist of previously unpublished plays.
Want to read 19th-century literature ranging from history and travel to politics and poetry? The Nineteenth Century Literary Society: the John Murray Publishing Archive database contains works written by Caroline Norton, Elizabeth Eastlake, Caroline Lamb, and more, all published by John Murray.
Science
2021 is the 91st anniversary of the construction of a historic monument in Colorado. This monument, the Hoover Dam, is 726 ft high, 1,244 ft long, contains more than 4 million cubic yards of concrete and took a team of 200 engineers to design. Find more resources ranging from Agriculture and Computer Technology to Engineering, Physics, and Zoology in the AccessScience database.
Needing resources that focus on environmental and ecological sciences? BioOne database has added over 80 new titles to their collection, giving researchers access to more than 200 science journals addressing critical environmental themes like climate, renewable energy, water quality, citizen science, and more.
