To celebrate multicultural learning, several campus partners are collaborating to creatively document the international educational experiences of IU East students. The Campus Library, World Languages and Cultures Department, Anthropology faculty and students, and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion are highlighting the global perspectives gained by students who participate in international study.
A sneak peek of the “Indiana University East Goes Global” StoryMap will be featured during International Education Week (IEW) and Geography Awareness Week. Anthropology faculty Dr. Aaron Comstock and student Stephanie Velazquez are creating a multimedia presentation of student experiences in study abroad courses. Interested in creating your own StoryMap? IU offers a free account. Need help? Contact IU East GIS mapping expert Aaron Comstock.
A new archive that documents the history of study abroad at IU East is being produced through the Campus Library, coordinated by IU East archivist Jesse Whitton and campus library director Frances Yates. Undergraduate or graduate students with interest in history, multicultural education, or international perspectives are welcome to apply to be paid research project assistants. The role includes compiling, organizing and curating content about the global experiences of IU East students. Contact fyates@iue.edu to express your interest for Spring 2023 or Summer 2023.
We are seeking content for the archives via a short survey. The purpose of this survey is to gather basic information about international travel for education of any IU East student or alumni who participated in study abroad programs through IU East. We value featuring as many experiences as possible.
International Education Week celebrates the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of State is part of efforts to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and to attract future leaders from abroad to study in the United States. National Geographic created Geography Awareness Week to highlight geography as both a discipline and as part of everyday life. Established by presidential proclamation more than 25 years ago, this annual public awareness program encourages citizens of all ages to think and learn about the significance of place and how we affect and are affected by it.
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are important tools that have the potential to improve geo-literacy, with a spatial focus on interconnectedness. GIS Day digital swag – maps, apps and creative activities such as coloring pages and map origami – are available. You can join the IU celebration of GIS Day on November 15, 2022, at the Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA)’s GIS Day Online Conference, with keynote speakers from Native Land Digital.

Multicultural, international learning can start at your computer, with access to campus library resources that contain information with an international focus. Numerous databases are specifically tailored to global studies, as well. For general material, try World History In Video, or Leisure, Travel, and Mass Culture: The History of Tourism. Literature is well supported by library resources – databases like South and Southeast Asian Literature, Caribbean Literature, Black Drama, and Latino Literature: Poetry, Drama, and Fiction explore writings across the world. News and current affairs are available in databases like Hong Kong Journals Online. For a history focus, there is Feminism in Cuba or British and Irish Women’s Letters and Diaries. For social issues, databases include Liberation Movements in Africa and Africa America. Business is covered by specialized international tools, such as Asian Business & Reference.
