Navigating Mental Health During the Holidays and Winter Season

The holiday season and winter months can be a challenging time for people. While this period often brings joy and celebration, it is also the coldest and darkest time of the year, and it can lead to feelings of stress, loneliness, and depression. Here are some tips to help you maintain your mental health during this time.

1. Acknowledge Your Feelings

It’s okay to feel a mix of emotions during the holidays. Whether you’re feeling homesick, overwhelmed by academic pressures, or just not in the festive spirit, acknowledging your feelings is the first step towards managing them.

2. Stay Connected

Isolation can exacerbate feelings of loneliness and depression. Try to stay connected with friends and family, even if it’s through virtual means. There are plenty of online services and games, such as Jackbox Games or a secret gift exchange service like Elfster, that can help you connect with friends and family from a distance.

3. Maintain a Routine

The disruption of your usual schedule can contribute to stress. Try to maintain a regular routine, including a consistent sleep schedule, balanced meals, and regular exercise. In addition, make sure you drink plenty of water in between the hot cider, cocoa, and alcohol you may indulge in this season.  These efforts can help stabilize your mood and energy levels.

4. Set Realistic Expectations

Set realistic expectations for yourself and others. We can often feel overwhelmed and upset with unexpected situations, like bad weather and travel delays, but it’s okay if things don’t go exactly as planned. Focus on what you can control and let go of the rest.

5. Seek Professional Help

If you’re struggling with your mental health, don’t hesitate to seek professional help. At IU, you have access to free, 24/7 virtual mental health services through TimelyCare. Talking to a mental health professional can provide you with strategies to cope with your feelings.

6. Practice Self-Care

Take time for yourself and find activities that help you relax and recharge. Whether it’s reading a book, taking a walk, or practicing yoga, self-care is crucial. IU East is a beautiful campus during the winter and there are plenty of walking routes around campus, indoor and outdoor, that you can indulge in.

7. Be Mindful of Substance Use

The holiday season can sometimes lead to increased alcohol and substance use. If you find yourself overindulging, seek healthier ways to cope with stress and emotions such as seeking professional help or practicing self-care.

8. Embrace the Season

Enjoy the little things that winter brings. Whether it’s watching movies, participating in winter sports, or knitting by the fire, embracing the season can help improve your mood. Getting fresh air and sunshine on the sunny days is also important, but dress appropriately for the weather. Dress in layers and don’t forget to cover your hands and ears.

Remember, it’s important to prioritize your mental health, especially during the holidays and winter season. Stay connected, take care of yourself, and don’t hesitate to reach out for support when needed. Healthy IU can connect you to a variety programs and resources focused on healthy eating, exercise, social activities, and mental health. Don’t forget that your Campus Library is also here to help!
