Lora Baldwin was a student at IU East in 1980, she became a librarian on campus in 1985, and we became friends in 1987. As a member of the faculty since 1985, Lora was pragmatic, smart, just, and caring. Through committee work, community service, and her role as a librarian, Lora met many people and many may remember her smile and friendly demeanor. Chances are good that if you were a student at IU East from 1985 to 1994, you were instructed by Lora on how to use the library. Perhaps your class has met in the Blakey Research Room in the Library. Or, you’ve noticed the sign there and wondered “who is George Blakey and why was this room named after him?” Professor George Blakey provided many strengths to the IU East community. He helped IU East remain a focus of higher education in this area of Indiana. His teaching charisma brought students and learners to IU East. He was dedicated to the campus and the Richmond area. Professor Blakey encouraged and supported the IU East Library and Archives through development and committee work. New Orleans, or NOLA, is a great place to attend a conference. I recently attended my fifth American Library Association annual meeting there. In June 2006, ALA was the first conference in NOLA after Hurricane Katrina laid waste to the City. It was in the New Orleans convention center that was made famous by the hordes of people who had nowhere else to go during the flooding. The Ernest N. Morial Convention Center is over a mile long, but only a part of it was ready in time for the ALA conference. Like many, I get impatient when my computer doesn’t respond quickly. However, there are things you can do to improve your computer’s functionality. Every computer should have a virus protection program installed. If your computer is new, you may still be running the virus protection program that came with your computer. However, if your trial has expired, or you aren’t using anything, then IU students can go to http://iuware.iu.edu to down load free software.
