Sunday was Constitution Day (sometimes called Citizenship Day), marking the anniversary in 1787, when 39 delegates in Independence Hall in Philadelphia signed the Constitution, bringing our form of representative democracy into being. It’s worth noting that, while our founders described the equality of “we the people” as being “self-evident”, in 1787 it was actually an open question. No similar government had ever yet succeeded. But because ours did, it has become a model for all similar governments founded since. Studying this historic document is a privilege of citizenship, and IU East is offering plenty of opportunities for doing just that. As we settle into Fall, we pause to reflect on Summer 2017 – a summer of service. June and July were full of programs in the IU East Campus Library and Center for Service Learning that connected IU East students as mentors for K-12 youth in our community. The enriching and fun learning activities included Math Counts! tutoring, Third Grade Academy and Herstory Camp. Math Counts! So many dedicated students were involved in tutoring this summer! Ann Tobin, campus/community liaison for service-learning, has profiled several of them. The Math Counts! program is generously supported by grants from the IU East Chancellor’s Innovation Fund, the Stamm Koechlein Family Foundation and the Indiana Kids program. On August 21, 2017 the Moon’s shape will block up to 90% of the Sun’s rays in the 47374 zip code area. From about 12:50 to 4:00 pm ET the partial Eclipse will be visible on the IUE Campus. The ultimate Partial ECLIPSE will occur about 2:25 pm. We will witness about 90% of an ECLIPSE. How do we know that? Check out the many resources NASA provides, highlighted in the Campus Library ECLIPSE 2017 LibGuide that provides shortcuts to a treasure trove of information and activities. In Indiana the ECLIPSE will not reach Totality (where the sky is completely dark); so Hoosiers should view the ECLIPSE through safe solar glasses or indirect viewing methods, such as a Pin-Hole Projector. … Continued

You might not think of the library first for the fine or performance arts. After all, you learn art by ‘doing’ – putting pencil to paper, or flute to lips. Words alone can’t fully articulate what it is. Sure, art students can frequently be found sketching in the library – the strong architectural and perspective lines here are great for compositions – but do they need to do research? The answer, of course, is yes. Art without context loses a lot of its meaning and power.
