As 2010 quickly fades into memory and 2011 arrives, New Year’s Resolutions might be on your “to do” list.  If so, have you considered being a mentor? Did you know January is National Mentoring Month? (www.nationalmentoringmonth.org) And did you know that right here in Richmond, Indiana we need mentors for two very special programs? The Richmond Community Schools needs 16 mentors to build “a positive relationship with a caring adult” with 6th – 8th grade students in the Cruising Into Your Future and Early College programs. A few days ago we were privileged to hear Vickie Weaver speak and read from her book Billie Girl, which won the 2009 Leapfrog Fiction Contest.  Weaver spoke on her journey towards becoming an author, and the challenges of that work. One thing Ms. Weaver has found is that her writing has naturally gravitated to giving voice to the voiceless and underrepresented in society.   This awakening began for her in college, as she discovered women’s studies classes, and now flows naturally from her novels. Ms. Weaver is an alumna of IU East, and received her M.F.A. in creative writing from Spalding University.  While she is first and foremost a writer, Weaver also teaches composition and creative writing part-time at IU … Continued

Sherlock Poems here, detective extraordinaire.  Perhaps you’ve heard of me? Regardless, you’ve no doubt heard that the IU East Friends of the Library, Drama Club, and Humanities Club are hosting a murder mystery luncheon on Saturday, April 17th.  A murder has been committed in the library, and only my refined intellect is up to the challenge!  Or maybe not.  As a detective, I like to hedge my bets, and a room full of enterprising sleuths seems like just the thing to shed light on this shadowy crime! Dying to get to the library?…. ….You could be if you buy a ticket for our April 17th “Murder in the Stacks” mystery lunch (the menu isn’t a mystery, but who dies and who did it is). The time is 1923, the place is the library, and the suspects are the entire library staff and all the lunch guests. This library intrigue is hosted by the IU East Friends of the Library and the Drama and Humanities Clubs. A murder in the library!  And only you can solve the crime!  Or help commit it… The IU East Drama club, Humanities club, and the Friends of the Library will hold a Murder Mystery play on April 17th, and we’re looking for some enthusiastic actors to portray the characters! The play is set in the 1920s, and heavy on the dramatic mood of the time.  Anyone is welcome to audition – students, faculty, staff, community residents.  If you’ve had a dramatic itch, or want to try out being an actor, this is the perfect opportunity for you!
