Student researchers’ special projects for Summer 2018

The IU East Campus Library is host to two students immersed in two different, and very interesting, research topics. An art tradition for forty years: The Whitewater Valley Art Competition Brittany Yoder, a Junior Communications major, was selected as an IU Bicentennial intern for summer 2018, to work on a “Connecting Campus and Community through Art” project. This internship is hosted by the IU Office of the Bicentennial. Under the supervision of IU East Archivist Beth South, Brittany will document the history of ways in which the campus engages with the community through art outreach. News from the Archives – Semester Roundup

This past semester, the archives has been very busy. We have a few ongoing projects, some new collections in the works, and a few updates. First, some ongoing projects… Bicentennial Oral History Project The Bicentennial Oral History Project is still happening! Oral History Assistant Ashley Clayton started with us this past August, contacting alumni and conducting interviews. This semester, Ashley interviewed 14 alumni, staff, and even a few faculty members, such as retired nursing professor Jane Vincent and current Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs T.J. Rivard. We also have online student Jennifer Haught, who started in October as our second Oral History Assistant, and she has been helping us with transcribing our interviews. Appreciation for Student Staff

“Healthy IU” is a program that promotes wellness of faculty and staff. Recently they featured a “Common Good” project, to enhance our community of caring. Activities included the practice of gratitude. As we reflect on what we are grateful for at work, one of the first that comes to mind is student staff. Out of the Archives- Traffic Control by Hannah Castor

While researching in the IU East library archives, I discovered a folder labeled “Traffic Light” located in the box “IU East Campus Construction.” I was originally looking for IU East building sketches, but curious, I started looking through the papers included in the “Traffic Light” folder and soon discovered that the folder is dedicated to both plans and reasons for putting in a traffic light at the intersection of Chester Blvd. and Horizons Parkway. I was surprised to find that there was not always a traffic light at this intersection, and reading through parts of the proposal, I discovered there were numerous accidents at the intersection, prompting the traffic light proposal to reach a new level of concern. What’s Happening in the Indiana University East Archives?

The IU East Archives is busy these days with various projects related to the IU Bicentennial. The archives is working to not only expand and improve its collections, but help the IU East campus stand out as well. Here are some projects that the IU East Archives is currently working on. Applying for an Indiana State Historical Marker With the help of the Office of the Bicentennial in Bloomington, all of the IU campuses are applying for an Indiana State Historical Marker. This year, the IU East campus, along with South Bend and IUPUI, is applying for a marker and, if approved, will have a marker installed on campus in 2018.
