It’s On Us

November 9th through 13th is the “It’s On Us National Week of Action“, a national awareness campaign administered by The White House to end sexual assault on college campuses. All this week IU East will focus on this theme. There will be a T-shirt give-away, a poster of the It’s On Us pledge in Springwood Hall for students to sign, and plenty of sexual assault information, including pamphlets and videos (IU East’s own “It’s On Us” video will debut on campus this Tuesday). Everyone is encouraged to wear their T-shirt on Tuesday, November 10th. Of course, IU has never taken sexual assault lightly. And if you or someone you know has suffered it, there is help for you. Media Literacy Week

Media education is the discipline that teaches people how messages are created to influence and persuade others, and how to analyze and critique those claims dispassionately. It also empowers people how to craft their own messages to be best received by others, through any medium. Poor media literacy leaves a person vulnerable to manipulation, whether benign or malicious, from any organization trying to influence opinion through imagery, sloganeering, advertisement, or more subtle reinforcement. Media literacy frees a person from (or at least mitigates) this influence, encouraging thoughtful reflection and critique of the ideas and claims that might otherwise go unexamined. Each of us has hundreds of stories built from our own lives and those whose lives intertwine with ours. Remember that story your dad told you about his first job? Or your grandmother talking about her trip across the country? How about when your parents met? It’s likely you have a cherished personal story, too – your first day at school, the first time you tried your favorite meal, your 16th birthday. For the 2015-16 academic year, IU East is celebrating Latino history, heritage and culture through a series of programs, events and workshops. Here’s a sneak peek of what’s coming up for the next few weeks: Author visit from Marjorie Agosin Acclaimed Chilean-Jewish author, poet, and scholar Marjorie Agosin will be on campus on Monday, October 12 at 4:00 pm to speak with students at the IU East Campus Library. Agosin, a graduate of IU, currently serves as the Luella LaMer Slaner Professor in Latin American studies and a professor of Spanish at Wellesley College. “I have been so busy asking for faith that I forgot to ask for patience.” ~ Marjorie Agosin, I lived on Butterfly Hill Latino Americans: 500 Years of History continues at IU East On Oct. 12-13, with a visit from award-winning author and activist Marjorie Agosin. Agosin is the winner of the Pura Belpré award for her young adult novel I Lived on Butterfly Hill. The book reflects her experience as a child during the severe political turmoil in Chile. Agosin is the author of numerous books, including these that are available in the IU East Campus Library: Amigas, A Cross and a Star, Landscapes of a New Land, Stitching Resistance, and Women, Gender, and Human Rights.
