New Canvas Tool Available – Library Resources

The IU East Campus Library is now offering a new tool to embed journal articles and other resources directly into Canvas from our database search engine, EBSCO Discovery. For the last few years, a tool known as “Reading Lists” has been available to faculty interested in searching for articles directly within Canvas and adding them to their modules. The platform that supported “Reading Lists” will be retiring in 2023 and EBSCO now has an LTI to replace “Reading Lists.” LTI is an acronym for Learning Tools Interoperability, which means it allows learning tools from different vendors to be launched within an application like a learning management system, such as Canvas. A university press publishes books that have been written and reviewed by scholars in their fields. IU East Campus Library has access to more than 300,000 eBooks from various databases. They are free to access for anyone with IU East log-in credentials. The Oxford Scholarship Online (OSO) database provides access to more than 20,000 academic works from the Oxford University Press. OSO covers subjects from humanities and social sciences to medicine and law. Within the past few days, OSO has added over 100 new titles to their collection, covering a diverse range of topics from 19th century Dutch Protestant theology and Baroque violins to questions about communication and censorship and how mental disorders affect one’s thoughts, feelings, and actions. Oxford Scholarship Online and the Prospective Print Pilot

Oxford Scholarship Online (OSO) is a database that offers access to thousands of academic works from Oxford University Press. Since the fall of 2016, The IU East Campus Library has had access to certain subject modules in Oxford Scholarship Online, including Literature, Philosophy, Religion, Social Work, Sociology, Business and Management, Classical Studies, Economics and Finance, and History. Starting February 2021, the IU East Campus Library, along with the other regional campus libraries, will be joining the Bloomington campus in participating in an Oxford Prospective Print Pilot through the Big Ten Academic Alliance Library Initiatives (BTAA). While comics today are often primarily associated with the superhero stories that provide fodder for blockbuster movies, they are and have been a much more diverse body of literature, and one worthy of study. A mainstay of childhood and young adult reading, comics have incorporated many genres, including action, humor, romance, crime, horror, drama, science fiction, and fantasy. There is also a strong subversive movement, largely aimed at adults, of ‘underground’ work that uses the medium in innovative ways. HathiTrust Special Book Access

IU East credentials (user name and password log-in) provide students, faculty and staff with access to many types of scholarly resources, even during the coronavirus pandemic. However, physical books are not currently accessible. IU East owns close to 20,000 print volumes, and millions of books from other IU libraries were also readily available at the click of a button in the library catalog, IUCAT. Since book stacks are closed, e-books have been valuable; but not all books (particularly older books) are available as e-texts, nor do all publishers license their output for electronic access.
