Recently, the State Library has been drawing attention to various state agencies in their Wednesday Word blog. Many of these are great tools for citizens, such as a site to check if you have unclaimed property, or a site to check your local school’s performance report. But it has many other links of great interest to scholars, as well. Criminal justice majors will benefit from the Appellate Case Search, history majors from the State Historic Architecture and Archaeology Research Database, and education majors from the statistical data from the Indiana Department of Education. In late June, ProQuest, one of our largest suppliers of scholarly databases, purchased Alexander Street Press, which is particularly strong on primary sources, music, and video. Some of the many ASP databases IU East uses include VAST, a multidisciplinary video collection, Black Thought and Culture, North American Immigrant Letters and Diaries, Women and Social Movements, Underground and Independent Comics, American Film Scripts, Oral History Online, and Twentieth Century North American Drama. So, there is a lot that we use that will probably look a bit different by next year. Welcome back! As the semester gets into gear, papers, projects, and assignments will begin to accumulate again. And to do them well, you’ll need to do research. You’ll be asked to find scholarly sources. Peer-reviewed sources. Primary sources. The kinds of things that Google and Bing just aren’t good at. But Google and Bing are easy to use. Scholarly tools take a bit more work. How do you get started? Scholarly databases use a very precise type of language that tells the computer how to search. Are you starting research in a business topic? The library subscribes to a lot of business-oriented databases that would be good for you. For business news, try the EBSCO databases Business Source Premier, Corporate Resource Net, and Communications and Mass Media. You can limit your results to things like full text articles, peer-reviewed articles, and articles published in the last few years. For example, this search for corporate research into consumer behavior came up with over three hundred articles. You can also find SWOT analyses, like these for the Ford Motor Company. If you don’t find enough of what you need in EBSCO, other good business databases include ABI/INFORM or Business and Company Resource Center. Run similar searches in them for … Continued
