While many Western authors are familiar with traditional and highly regimented poetry forms, such as villanelles, pantoums and rondeaus, poetry is not limited either to the western world or to strict formats.  Below are a handful of poem types that may not be familiar to most people Landay Afghan women have been composing and chanting landays for up to four thousand years, and some sources believe that landays may be the most authentic form of female expression from Afghanistan.  A landay consists of a single two-line verse, often sung to the accompaniment of a hand drum. Drop-in Poetry and more at your Campus Library

Every April since 1996, the US has celebrated National Poetry Month.  While the Academy of American Poets has developed a 30-day list of activities, the IU East Campus Library has resources and databases to help students, staff and faculty observe year ‘round.  To kick things off this year, the Library is hosting a drop-in poetry activity on Thursday, April 13 from 12:30 to 1:30 PM. The National Federation of State Poetry Societies

The Ohio Poetry Association (OPA) hosted the annual conference for the National Federation of State Poetry Societies (NFSPS) in Columbus, OH from June 22 to June 26. It was the first in-person meeting for both OPA and NFSPS since early 2020. One hundred and fifty poets from 29 states attended, partaking in workshops, performances, and open mic events. An eco-poetry hike was a special event in Highbanks MetroPark. Eco poetry refers to poems that discuss the interactions between humans and nature and can range from deeply personal to deeply political works. These poems are concerned with environmentalism, sustainable farming, recycling and other processes that people can undertake to preserve the world around them. Poetry from Community Christian Schools

For National Poetry Month, IU East Campus Library collaborated with Community Christian School for the entire month of April, to help students write their own original poetry.  On May 2nd those students, in 5th through 8th grades, delivered their poetry on campus, with rousing success.
