Annually since 2012, IU East selects a book that connects the campus and community in reading, study, and service. This year’s One Book selection, A Chance in the World by Steve Pemberton, has themes that intersect identity, family, child welfare, community, culture, education, and more. On Tuesday, October 25, IU East will host a day of activities which enhance connections between campus and the community, with a focus on the themes in Pemberton’s book.
One Book events are open to all. A full list and additional information is available here: http://iue.libguides.com/OneBook2016/eventschedule
Empty Bowls, a fundraiser for Gleaners Food Pantry, begins at 11:30 am and continues through 1:00 pm. For $10, you can buy a handmade bowl created by an IU East student and fill it with one of several delicious soups provided by local restaurants and caterers. After you’re done with your soup, you may wash out the bowl as a reminder that someone’s bowl is always empty. This is the second time IU East has held this event on campus, with previous soup contributors including Firehouse BBQ, The Tin Lizzie and Little Sheba’s. A free Glaze-a-Thon, in which anyone is welcome to glaze bowls, takes place on Friday, October 21.
The Student Government Association at IU East is engaged in a service project connected to A Chance in the World that will benefit the JACY House. Both campus and community members are invited to bring an item that will help their staff continue to provide more than 400 forensic interviews with youth who are victims of abuse. Items may be brought to the IU East Campus Library M-Th 8-6 or Friday 8-5, or to any of the One Book events on Oct. 25.
“A Chance to Discover” resource fair begins at 5:00 p.m. Local organizations will share information about their services. Represented will be Birth to Five, Meridian Health Services, JACY House, Inter-Community Action Program, CAECI Early Head Start, Circle K International, the IU East Center for Health Promotion, the IU East Circle K student club, Communities in Schools, the IU East Center for Service Learning, Open Arms Ministries, Centerstone, CASA, and others. Lightning Talks will occur from 5:15-5:45. These are two-minute presentations which focus on themes in Pemberton’s book. IU East instructor Ted Leahey’s speech classes and Katie Reising’s Richmond High School students will be featured, along with a surprise performance.
After mingling among the “Chance to Discover” tables and listening to the Lightning Talks, you are welcome to get your copy of A Chance in the World signed by Steve Pemberton himself. He will sign books in two rounds: from 6:15 to 6:45 and from 8:00 to 9:00. Don’t miss this opportunity to meet with the author!
Author Pemberton’s presentation begins promptly at 7:00 p.m. Seating in Vivian auditorium in Whitewater Hall begins at 6:30 p.m. If you have any questions, or want to research the book’s ideas and topics in more depth, please email us at iueref@iue.edu.
