Earlier this semester, students from the Animals and Earth Club at IU East and faculty from the Sustainability Council, including Assistant Librarian of Access Services Beth South, had the opportunity to attend the Indiana Sustainability and Resilience Conference (ISRC) on February 9th at IU Indianapolis. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about sustainability efforts happening in Indiana and regionally from presenters that included architects, city planners, engineers, non-profit organizers, state park employees, social workers, business leaders, public policy advocates, and educators. The IU East Campus Library, in partnership with the Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM), is hosting physician and author Dr William Cooke, for a health literacy event on Monday March 25th. Dr. Cooke’s book, Canary in the Coal Mine, addresses issues such as how socioeconomic and racial disparities impact the health of people, how one’s life purpose can change, needle exchange programs, and dealing with public health crises. The author presentation begins at 10:00 a.m., followed by a Q & A dialogue with the author at 11:00 a.m. All are welcome for this free event, but registration is requested to ensure seating is available. An initiative of Keep America Beautiful, we celebrate America Recycles Day on November 15, 2023.  Reducing and reusing materials are useful options to reduce waste, but not always possible. While many people care about recycling, it can be confusing about how to recycle properly. According to Keep America Beautiful, in the past year, Americans have recycled 1.8 million pounds of single-stream recycling, 157 thousand pounds of clothing/textiles, and 2.3 million pounds of mixed paper. Benefits of recycling include reducing landfill waste and greenhouse gases and helping to preserve natural resources. October is LGBTQ History Month, and IU East provides varied types of resources to assist students, staff and faculty in supporting members of the LGBTQ community.  At the IU East Campus Library, we subscribe to several databases focused on LGBTQ research.  Sources like Genderwatch cover both historical and modern approaches to issues in sexuality, while the Archives of Sexuality and Gender include numerous primary sources demonstrating the breadth of LGBTQ history.  In addition, the library maintains an LGBTQ community digital archive, centering on local voices and history.  The library maintains a libguide with local resources, event dates and other useful information. This month-long campaign promotes awareness about domestic violence, providing a platform for survivors, advocates, and communities to come together and raise their voices against abuse.
