Breaking the Silence: Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Breaking the Silence: Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Domestic Violence Awareness Month, observed every October, serves as a powerful reminder of the urgent need to address one of society’s less talked about issues. This month-long campaign promotes awareness about domestic violence, providing a platform for survivors, advocates, and communities to come together and raise their voices against abuse. The IU East Campus Library has many resources, including the Domestic & Sexual Assault Violence Resource Guide to help you learn about domestic and sexual assault and resources available to help those who have been affected.

Domestic violence has no boundaries when it comes to age, race, gender, and socioeconomic status. It can happen to anyone. “Nearly 3 in 10 women and 1 in 10 men in the US have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by a partner and reported it having a related impact on their functioning” (Hotline.org).

State and local domestic violence resources play a critical role in providing support, safety, and empowerment to individuals facing domestic violence situations. Local organizations, including A Better Way (Genesis of Richmond) and Refuge of Hope of Richmond, provide resources to help build healthy relationships. State resources like Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Strengthening Indiana Families – Family Resource Center, Ohio Domestic Violence Network provide resources to further the mission of eliminating domestic violence.

On October 11, IU East will host Walk a Mile in Her Shoes. Participants will walk one mile in women’s high-heeled shoes to raise awareness about rape, sexual assault, and gender violence. Allies are encouraged to walk for ALL victims of sexualized violence. For detailed information about the event and how to register and donate, please visit iue.edu/walkamile.

IU East is dedicated to ensuring the safety of all its students and strives to raise awareness about healthy relationships, sexual health, etc. If you have any questions or concerns, contact IU East EEOC Officer & Deputy Title IX Coordinator Tracy Amyx, or access IU resources at the campus Title IX page.
