Join us on April 29 as we celebrate National Poetry month, the Red Wolves Write program, and the Latino Americans special events series. The Early College 8th grade students from Hibberd middle school will be presenting their original slam poetry on Friday, April 29 at 8:45 a.m. Campus and community members are welcome! There will be light refreshments and some special edition Red Wolves Write t-shirts available. Most importantly, this is an opportunity to encourage young adults in their creative and personal endeavors. Slam Poetry was introduced at the Nuyorican Poetry Café in New York City in 1975, and has strong ties with the Latino community. Celebrating Indiana University, education, and reading were the goals of the “Red Wolves Read Out” hosted by the IU East Campus Library for the first IU Day on April 12, 2016. We accomplished those goals with the participation of more than 300 adult readers and 400 youth readers, and more than 4000 listeners. “Read aloud for 15 minutes to anyone, anywhere, on IU Day!” The idea is simple: read aloud to anyone, anywhere, on IU Day. The response of readers was amazing, and we had participation in every school in Wayne County, and several businesses and community groups, with readers who are IU East students, staff, faculty, alumni, and community members. April is Global Astronomy Month, sponsored by Astronomers Without Borders, a group dedicated to strengthening the bonds between nations by looking outward together. Their motto is “One People, One Sky”, and they focus on practical astronomy that you can participate with in your back yard over more esoteric theories. Astronomy is one of the most viscerally compelling of the sciences, because any child can understand its scope and grandeur just by looking up at the night sky; of getting excited at being able to identify a constellation like the Big Dipper. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a time to rededicate ourselves to protecting all members of our community. This year, the focus is on the ways individuals and communities can take action to promote safety, respect, and equality. IU East is holding events all month – programs include the Clothesline Project from 11-1 each day this week, where students are encouraged to write a message regarding sexual assault awareness. Also this week, on Wednesday from 12-4, Operation Street Smart will provide information on narcotics, including trends, terminology, concealment techniques, and their physiological effects. Later in the month, IU East will offer many events such as Step Up Training and self-defense classes, as well as a Take Back the Night vigil … Continued

On April 4, IU East is hosting two retired members of the U.S. House for the Congress to Campus event. David Minge, (D) Minnesota (1993-2001) and Steven T. Kuykendall, (R) California (1999-2001), will visit classrooms and talk with students interested in the democratic process. There will also be a reception from 5-6 pm in the Whitewater Hall lobby, and a Town Hall meeting directly following in the Community Room entitled “Election 2016: The Changing Nature of Political Campaigns.” Both the reception and Town Hall are open to the public.
