Service-Learning:  10 years of campus-community connections

The Center for Service-Learning (CSL) provides opportunities “to enrich the campus and community through educationally meaningful service that helps students become socially responsible citizens.” For the past ten years, Coordinator of Service-Learning Ann Tobin has helped students turn these opportunities into positive outcomes. From tutoring and mentoring programs in local schools and on-campus, to service-learning projects in a variety of IU East courses, Ann has helped IU East students grow personally and professionally. She has facilitated partnerships with numerous community organizations and schools and served as the advisor for the Circle K International student service organization, which is the collegiate branch of the Kiwanis. Throughout the 2018-19 academic year, we’ll be celebrating the many individuals in the Campus Library and Center for Service-Learning who do so much to contribute to student success and create an inclusive and welcoming experience for all students. This week’s blog features Ann Tobin, our campus/community liaison for the Center for Service-Learning. Ann creates community connections by engaging IU East students in service for course requirements, work study, career exploration, volunteerism, special projects, tutoring/mentoring, graduate school applications, and personal enrichment. The Center for Service-Learning, housed in the Campus Library, connects IU East students with service opportunities in communities throughout East Central Indiana and bordering towns in Ohio. From the past to the present: Continuing community engagement at Indiana University East

The IU East campus has a long history of community engagement. IU Bicentennial intern Maureen Girdler is learning about that throughout the Spring 2018 semester. From interviews with students, staff and faculty, and research using historical documents in the IU East archives, she presents here some highlights of the past editions of the Pioneer Press student newspaper, as well as some reflections from members of the IU East community who have been engaged in service. Circle-K Club, then and now Circle-K Club originally started in 1976. It is a college-based service organization affiliated with the national Kiwanis. Summer of service

As we settle into Fall, we pause to reflect on Summer 2017 – a summer of service. June and July were full of programs in the IU East Campus Library and Center for Service Learning that connected IU East students as mentors for K-12 youth in our community. The enriching and fun learning activities included Math Counts! tutoring, Third Grade Academy and Herstory Camp. Math Counts! So many dedicated students were involved in tutoring this summer! Ann Tobin, campus/community liaison for service-learning, has profiled several of them.
