Service Learning at Northeastern

Northeastern Elementary School is one of the many community partners working with the Center for Service-Learning.  IU East students placed at Northeastern Elementary get on-the-job experience working with children in an education environment while at the same time providing valued mentor relationships for youth.   CSL currently has students assisting in classrooms and tutoring during the Homework Heroes after-school program.  In the Spring, IU East science and education students will have the opportunity to help with Northeastern’s science fair. Volunteer opportunities are open to all IU East students! Elementary education major Kati Felix is one of the students who tutored in the Homework Heroes program this semester.  She worked with three students for an hour each week.  Kati reflected, “This experience … Continued

The Center for Service-Learning would like to officially congratulate IU East student Kristy Lohnes on becoming the Education Coordinator at The Boys & Girls Club of Wayne County’s Central Unit.  As the Education Coordinator, Kristy not only helps students with their homework but she also plans learning activities and implements educational games that support advanced learning.  Kristy began her service-learning experience with The Boys & Girls Club last summer and continued until Fall when she accepted this position.  She will be graduating in December with her degree in Business Administration and a minor in Psychology.  Regarding her experiences at The Boys & Girls Club, Kristy says, “it shaped my minor in psychology by letting me apply my knowledge to my … Continued

Service-Learning opportunities abound for the Fall Semester.  The Experiential Learning Scholars will soon be busy with our community partners.  Currently, the Center for Service Learning has IU East students mentoring in Richmond at the Boys & Girls Club of Wayne County, Girls, Inc. of Wayne County, and in Fountain City at Northeastern Elementary.  All that’s missing is YOU! The community organizations below are looking for individual IU East students, entire class projects, or club activities to help serve their outreach areas.  Beginning September 10th, Northeastern Elementary needs heroes, a.k.a tutors, for their Homework Heroes program on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00-4:15. Every June the American Library Association holds their Annual Conference; this year I had the opportunity of attending it, in Anaheim, CA, for the first time.  The American Library Association is a professional organization for all disciplines of librarians to receive support for their positions in the form of networking, resources, and professional development opportunities, including Annual, to “enhance learning and ensure access to information for all.”  There really is something for every type of librarian, from academic to public from private to prison.   I attended a variety of sessions to match the variety of job duties and interests I have, including but not limited to Innovative Outreach, Working with Grants, Civic Engagement, and Promotional Videos.  Additionally, I walked through … Continued
