This year’s One Book selection, The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf, first came to IU East as one of the books that the library acquired as a result of the Next Indiana Bookshelf. The Next Indiana Bookshelf was a Bicentennial Legacy project from 2015 that gave Indiana-themed books to selected libraries throughout the state as a means to promote state history and pride. This selection was chosen because of its strong ties to Indiana, its theme and its connection with other on-campus theme activities. The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf layers multiple issues into one fulfilling, ultimately uplifting narrative. As we settle into Fall, we pause to reflect on Summer 2017 – a summer of service. June and July were full of programs in the IU East Campus Library and Center for Service Learning that connected IU East students as mentors for K-12 youth in our community. The enriching and fun learning activities included Math Counts! tutoring, Third Grade Academy and Herstory Camp. Math Counts! So many dedicated students were involved in tutoring this summer! Ann Tobin, campus/community liaison for service-learning, has profiled several of them. The Math Counts! program is generously supported by grants from the IU East Chancellor’s Innovation Fund, the Stamm Koechlein Family Foundation and the Indiana Kids program. The American Library Association Annual Conference, held this year in Chicago from June 22 through June 27, featured 144 poster presentations on a variety of topics. Among them was a poster I created, entitled ”Interdisciplinary Community Service and the Library: Crime Camp.” The conference usually attracts roughly 14,000 librarians from across the country, and this was my first presentation in front of a national audience. Nervous? Never! Crime Camp was originally developed in 2014 as an interdisciplinary partnership between the library and the criminal justice department. As it continued into 2015, however, the library sought out sponsorships and participation from community partners as well as the assistance of other departments. Third Grade Academy + IU East = learning success!

Since 2010, the IU East Campus Library has been involved with Third Grade Academy, providing reading adventures and learning activities. In 2014 we became the campus host site and since then have enjoyed a month of young learners in the library each summer. We can always count on support provided by the talented and giving IU East staff, faculty and students and TGA 2017 has proven to be a particularly lively and engaging learning extravaganza. The eighteen third graders have experienced a variety of activities and interactions that teach them new content but also can help them feel comfortable within the college environment.
