  Yes, you read correctly. Students currently in 3rd grade who stay on track through high school and attending IU East, will graduate college in 2030. IU East is again, for the 8th summer, hosting Third Grade Academy. This program helps students become stronger readers and prepares them for academic success. We are a program site for two classes meeting daily throughout June, with a total of 20 children.    In addition to enhancing their reading skills, TGA students interact with college students, faculty and staff for a variety of fun activities. Over four days in April and May this year, the IU East Campus Library partnered with Community Christian Schools to write and perform original slam poetry pieces. This project was sparked by Jackie Schilicte, who brought in IU East librarian KT Lowe to lead the workshops. Twenty seven students participated in this program in honor of National Poetry Month, delivering poems on a number of different subjects, including death, owls, basketball, mysterious creatures in the woods and, of course, bacon. Students in fifth through eighth grades taught by Lori Fowler participated in the program. The IU East Campus Library acts not only as a resource for IU East students, but also for the community that the campus serves. This year, the library partnered in several K-12 programs, the largest of which was the Early College 8th Grade Diversity project. Every year, the IU East Campus Library, as part of its commitment to the Early College program, assists 8th grade students at Hibberd Intermediate School in Richmond, Indiana on a yearlong diversity-oriented research project. This year, the class focused on community development through a civic planning project. The end of another school year will soon be upon us! Some of you might have a few classes scheduled for summer school. But for many, these months are ones of complete academic freedom. Lethargy can be an enemy, though. Studies have shown that learning is lost over the long break (particularly in the sciences), wasting time at the beginning of a semester re-learning content. And while these effects are documented far more on the K-12 level, the risks are real at the collegiate level, too. Of course, the summer break gives you time for trips or experiences that would be impossible during the normal school year. And taking those opportunities is something to be encouraged. Red Wolves Read again! The IU East Community Read Out will be on Wednesday, April 19, in celebration of IU Day. This all-day, anytime event gives alumni, students, faculty, and staff an opportunity to share a love of reading and IU pride. This year, the first 250 people who register to read will receive a free Read Out t-shirt. To pledge to read 15 minutes or more on April 19, simply complete this easy form: http://iue.libsurveys.com/IU-East-Community-Read-Out After you register, you can pick up your t-shirt at the Campus Library. Last year, 200 registered participants read to 2759 people, including students, families and colleagues. They read in classes, meetings, parks, and more.
