Math has always been one of Ashton Fee’s strong suits. When Ann Tobin, Service-Learning Liaison, asked her to tutor for the Math Counts! program over the summer, she was more than enthusiastic to join. Ashton, a sophomore at Indiana University East with a major in Elementary Education and a minor in Early Education, has been a welcome addition to the program ever since. Math Counts!, which has served over 75 students to date, began in February 2016 after a successful summer tutoring program at IU East in 2015. Sexual assault on campus remains a huge concern for both students and administration alike. To raise awareness of this important issue, and to promote resources to help stop campus sexual assault, IU East is participating in It’s On Us. A nationwide project intended to support victims while providing help and resources, It’s On Us launched in 2014. IU East will be hosting a series of events throughout the week of 11/7-11/11. On Monday, the Red Flag Campaign will launch on the quad. The Red Flag Campaign encourages participants to look for “red flags”, or warning signs that might signal an imminent assault and speak up when they see them. Annually since 2012, IU East selects a book that connects the campus and community in reading, study, and service.  This year’s One Book selection, A Chance in the World by Steve Pemberton, has themes that intersect identity, family, child welfare, community, culture, education, and more.  On Tuesday, October 25, IU East will host a day of activities which enhance connections between campus and the community, with a focus on the themes in Pemberton’s book. OMA: Opening Minds through Art

Now in its second year, Opening Minds through Art (OMA) is an intergenerational program bringing students together with elders with dementia to produce failure-free works of abstract art. OMA is highly interactive, with the student acting as a facilitator for the elder artist’s vision and abilities. IU East has partnered with Friends Fellowship Community in Richmond to continue this award-winning, enlightening program. Friends Fellowship is the only facility in the state of Indiana to offer OMA to its residents. OMA uses art projects as a basis for communication between students and elder artists.
