IU East Math Counts! Tutor Proves Innovation + Teaching = Success

IU East Math Counts! Tutor Proves Innovation + Teaching = Success

Math has always been one of Ashton Fee’s strong suits. When Ann Tobin, Service-Learning Liaison, asked her to tutor for the Math Counts! program over the summer, she was more than enthusiastic to join. Ashton, a sophomore at Indiana University East with a major in Elementary Education and a minor in Early Education, has been a welcome addition to the program ever since. Math Counts!, which has served over 75 students to date, began in February 2016 after a successful summer tutoring program at IU East in 2015. Recognizing that the community need for tutors would remain even after the end of summer, Tobin applied for and received a Chancellor’s Innovation Grant to pay tutors for sharing their math skills … Continued

Local Families Count on Math Counts! at IU East

“She seems to have a renewed interest in math. She was excited about coming each week.” “I really notice the increased confidence and positive attitude about math. I feel if she didn’t have this, she would have fallen behind, worried more, and not had as positive experience in starting high school.” “My son had become more inquisitive about what career options are available to him. With the tutor and college setting it has made him think more about his future.” “The IUE tutoring program has helped my child strengthen the math deficits she faced and now has a foundation on which to build upon.” “My daughter loves coming here; this has been an awesome asset to the community!!!” “This was … Continued

OMA: Opening Minds through Art

OMA: Opening Minds through Art

Now in its second year, Opening Minds through Art (OMA) is an intergenerational program bringing students together with elders with dementia to produce failure-free works of abstract art. OMA is highly interactive, with the student acting as a facilitator for the elder artist’s vision and abilities. IU East has partnered with Friends Fellowship Community in Richmond to continue this award-winning, enlightening program. Friends Fellowship is the only facility in the state of Indiana to offer OMA to its residents. OMA uses art projects as a basis for communication between students and elder artists. The end results, besides impressive works of art, include increased self esteem for the artists and increased awareness of dementia for the students. Melissa Baxter, OMA Program … Continued
