As a diverse and inclusive campus, Indiana University East is dedicated to ensuring a safe and enriching environment for all its students. We also want to support students involved in educational events that present new information in interesting and engaging ways. By Nancy Schlichte, undergraduate service engagement scholar The Early College Students from Dennis Intermediate School, Hibberd, and Test Intermediate schools in Richmond are preparing for the road ahead by participating in a career exploration program. Thanks to the Paul Kriese Service Engagement Scholarship, and in coordination with the Early College Director, Dr. Jackie Schlichte, I have the opportunity to facilitate the career exploration program with the seventy-five participating students. When we first began discussing career options, the top choices for careers were those that were known to make a lot of money. The mission of the Center for Service-Learning at Indiana University East is to promote service engagement as an integral component of a student’s civic education and to facilitate Campus connections with the regional and online communities we serve. The mission of Communities In Schools is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. These compatible missions have produced partnerships that benefit all involved. Since 2010, the IU East CSL has continuously increased service connections with CIS programs. In 2015, we are honored to have received the Communities in Schools of Wayne County “Champion of Education” Community Organization award. It’s On Us

November 9th through 13th is the “It’s On Us National Week of Action“, a national awareness campaign administered by The White House to end sexual assault on college campuses. All this week IU East will focus on this theme. There will be a T-shirt give-away, a poster of the It’s On Us pledge in Springwood Hall for students to sign, and plenty of sexual assault information, including pamphlets and videos (IU East’s own “It’s On Us” video will debut on campus this Tuesday). Everyone is encouraged to wear their T-shirt on Tuesday, November 10th. Of course, IU has never taken sexual assault lightly. And if you or someone you know has suffered it, there is help for you.
