Military Matters

We count ourselves lucky to have almost 200 veterans as part of our student body. The life experiences of veterans add immeasurably to the discussion in any classroom. We try to cultivate this relationship – we are frequently named as a military-friendly school, and as a member of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC) Consortium, we offer online Bachelors and Masters programs targeted to help mobile service-members to complete their degrees. And Purdue’s Military Family Research Institute offers similar services to students enrolled at the Purdue Technology program on our campus. “If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one.” – Mother Teresa, Roman Catholic missionary in India (1910-1997) People who are hungry are all around us. We often think of the problem of hunger as one of starvation, experienced by people in war-torn countries thousands of miles away or those at the absolute bottom, who are homeless and alone. But that isn’t true – plenty of people struggle to put food on the table, at least sometimes. We call this Food Insecurity – when people don’t always know where their next meal is coming from, or how they’ll provide their children with something nutritionally adequate and safe. Hispanic Cultural Resources and Opportunities

IU East is observing Hispanic Heritage Month from September 13th to October 13th this year, and there’s plenty to see and do! We started last week with a visit from Alice Driver, a photographer and documentarian, who spoke about her photojournalism and film career (her documentary is If Images Could Fill Our Empty Spaces) and visited a number of classes to talk about US-Mexico border relations and related issues. But if you missed seeing Dr. Driver, there are still plenty of other activities to participate in. Hispanic Health segments will air all month on WCTV’s ‘Let’s Talk’ series, focusing on needs and resources within Richmond. September is National Literacy Month. Used in this context, literacy refers to the ability to read and write. Why does literacy have an entire month devoted to it on the national level? According to dosomething.org (https://www.dosomething.org/facts/11-facts-about-literacy-america) “1 in 4 children in America grow up without learning how to read.” Appreciating the fact that you are able to read, and taking action to help others read is a great way to celebrate National Literacy Month. Right here at IU East, in the Center for Service-Learning (CSL), located in the Campus Library, we have lots of opportunities for you to help. For the Love of Cities…and Service

The wait is over and the “One book” selection for Fall 2014 has been announced! It is For the Love of Cities: the love affair between people and their places by Peter Kageyama. The book examines what makes cities lovable, and what motivates residents to take action to make their community a better place to live. He explains the “continuum of engagement” and how to move from “functional” to “meaningful.” In chapter seven, Kageyama writes “A recurring thread in this book is the notion that small things, seemingly insignificant, can have disproportionate impacts…In making lovable cities, just as in making loving human relationships, little things matter–a lot.” He calls them “love notes.” Right here at IU East we have … Continued
