We work hard today to combat discrimination, promote equality, and protect human dignity.  It’s a task that is never truly done, and requires constant diligence.  But it is a task that has seen great successes, and our world has been strengthened and improved.  So, from our own experiences, it can be hard to comprehend a time in which the law of the land declared African Americans as only three fifths of a person, and a black person could be beaten or killed with impunity for disobedience. “For the dead and for the living, we must bear witness.” – Elie Wiesel Dr. Paul Kriese is a tenured Political Science professor at Indiana University East where he has taught since 1983. Dr. Kriese grew up as a Quaker within a diverse neighborhood in Buffalo, New York, where most of his neighbors were Catholic, Jewish, African American, American Indian, Asian, or Hispanic. It was a poor community and, while Paul was poor also, he always helped out his neighbors and was very active in the community. He learned early on the importance of diversity, respect, and community engagement and it was a major influence on his education. On October 16th, IU East will host Robert Jensen, a famous journalism professor from the University of Texas at Austin.  Dr. Jensen will explore race issues in his speech “Power and Politics in the Age of Obama: Is the United States Post-Racial?” Although Dr. Jensen will be discussing racism, he is a significant voice on many other topics ranging from white privilege, feminism (especially as relates to pornography, sexual violence, and the social construction of masculinity), America’s place in the world (particularly its military actions), journalism, and the furthering of progressive political goals through the use of media.  He has published dozens of scholarly articles, books, newspaper columns, blogs, and more detailing his thoughts on these issues. 50 years since Martin Luther King’s dream speech, and opportunities still abound for us to work together to make the world a better place. The Center for Service-Learning (CSL) at IU East is committed to connecting IU East students with community needs.  There are many options for you to help, some requiring as few as 2 -3 hours for a one-time event and some on a regular basis.
