One Book 2018 – This Far by Faith

This year’s One Book Day is Wednesday, October 24th. The featured book, This Far by Faith, discusses a wide range of social and health-related issues in Detroit, such as poverty, joblessness, mental illness and homelessness. The Reverend Faith Fowler, pastor of the Cass Community United Methodist Church, wrote This Far by Faith to humanize the people who use the services offered by the Cass Community Church and its associated services. To celebrate This Far by Faith, IU East has scheduled an entire day of events coinciding with the book’s themes. The Women of IU Conference offered an opportunity to learn, share, and network. The goal for equality of males and females necessitates social, legal, and practical changes. The recent #METOO movement offers a renewed approach for improvement, for conversations, for expressions of pent-up feelings of frustration at the still unequal world. The Women of IU Conference offered a way to rethink and consider new avenues of action, good ideas for mentoring relationships, wise women’s words, and positive reinforcement. The conference keynote speakers and break-out sessions online presentations and messages provide access to a broader audience to experience the shared ideas. Integrating and Creating Archives: My Experience with the Primary Source Immersion Program

Dr. Rountree shares his experience at the Indiana University Libraries’ Primary Source Immersion program. As I sat there next to Kurt Vonnegut’s Breakfast of Champions typed manuscript with his editor’s marks all over it, I knew that I was somewhere special. For a bibliophile like myself, it was amazing to be in the same room as this manuscript, Shakespeare’s folios, and other historical artifacts in the Lilly Library Archives. The Lilly was one of several archives that I visited and talked about at the Primary Source Immersion Program on the Indiana University Bloomington campus. Jenny Hoops and Women of Valor

This fall, IU Bloomington MLS student Jenny Hoops is developing digital timelines for the IU East Campus Library Women of Valor: Interfaith Actions for Social Justice LibGuide, in collaboration with library director Frances Yates. Jenny will be utilizing Knightlab software to develop digital scholarship for many of the women featured in Women of Valor, with emphasis on their contributions to social justice. She also plans to add additional content to the guide, particularly in her area of focus: women’s lives and experiences after World War II. Beth South is Coordinator of Campus Library User Services and Archivist at Indiana University East. This past week, I had the opportunity to attend the Library Management Skills Institute in Bloomington, IN, sponsored by the Association of Research Libraries and Indiana University Bloomington Libraries. It was an intensive and engaging three-day workshop, led by consultant DeEtta Jones. Participants included librarians in varied positions at different libraries and at various stages in our careers, but we all shared similar concerns and issues. Whether we have been managers for years, in a new position, or have yet to enter a management position, we were all looking for ways to prepare ourselves for these leadership roles, or to perform better in these roles. … Continued
