The IU East Campus Library is an active place this summer! We hosted two Third Grade Academy (TGA) classes, coordinated the 2nd annual Crime Camp, produced two new educational television shows in collaboration with WCTV, and are the site for the Center for Service-Learning tutoring program.  Seventy-five IU East faculty, staff and students have impacted 70 youth with interactive educational programs that focus on a range of literacy skills in reading math, and science, as well as critical thinking and cultural arts. The United States is undergoing a massive demographic shift, as immigration again changes our national character and makeup. But in recent decades, the influx of people has not been from Europe but from our own hemisphere – Mexico, Central, and South America. And like generations of previous immigrants, these new Americans bring their own vibrant culture, interweaving it with the multifaceted tapestry that is already here. Richmond seems far away from the southern border, but almost all of us have still been touched in some way by Hispanic culture – neighbors, friends, coworkers, and colleagues. One Book 2015

The campus One Book for 2015 has been selected – it is Positive by Paige Rawl. A powerful, visceral memoir of her life, it chronicles Paige’s life with HIV and her experiences with unreasoning hate and bullying. Students and staff can get their free, IU branded copy in the library, complete with a letter of introduction from Chancellor Cruz-Uribe. You can get a jump on fall semester and the events surrounding the One Book by reading it now. And it’s perfect summer reading – her prose is lively and quick and powerful. Do you like poetry? IU East has a great upcoming opportunity for you. Bianca Lynne Spriggs, an award-winning poet (2013 Al Smith Individual Artist Fellowship in Poetry, several Artist Enrichment and Arts Meets Activism grants from the Kentucky Foundation for Women, and a nominee for the Pushcart Prize) will be coming to campus to read her work on Tuesday, March 24th. The event will be in the Whitewater Hall art gallery from 7-8 p.m., and is open to the public if you want to bring friends or family. With graduation swiftly approaching, hundreds of IU East students are about to embark on their careers. Of course, you’ve probably been preparing for your future career for a while now. Classwork, internships, part-time jobs, and more have helped hone your skills for today’s job market. But sometimes, an extra personal connection or contact can make all the difference. A big opportunity for new or soon-to-be graduates is the 4 Colleges Career Fair, which is coming up this month – Tuesday, March 31st in the Lingle Grand Hall at Reid Hospital (on the lower level).
