September 15 – October 15, 2012 *Art Exhibits * Service Learning * Film * Poetry * Visiting Authors* National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed in America each year, from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. This observation also honors Mexico, Chile, and five Central American countries, who all celebrate their independence in September :Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Beginning in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson, the observation was extended by Congress twenty years later to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15. Service-Learning opportunities abound for the Fall Semester.  The Experiential Learning Scholars will soon be busy with our community partners.  Currently, the Center for Service Learning has IU East students mentoring in Richmond at the Boys & Girls Club of Wayne County, Girls, Inc. of Wayne County, and in Fountain City at Northeastern Elementary.  All that’s missing is YOU! The community organizations below are looking for individual IU East students, entire class projects, or club activities to help serve their outreach areas.  Beginning September 10th, Northeastern Elementary needs heroes, a.k.a tutors, for their Homework Heroes program on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00-4:15. This summer has brought a lot of changes for me. It’s my first summer of college, I will be turning 20 and this is also my first summer that I have been employed.  I feel like one of the luckiest girls this summer to be employed at Richmond’s own Girls Inc. The experiences that I have had at Girls Inc. have been nothing but positive. I want to take the time now to share some of these great experiences.  For those who don’t know Girls Inc. is a year-long facility that helps develop many of the girls in this community. Summer and Service make a great mix, and we’re busy connecting campus and community.  Frances Yates continues in her role as faculty representative for Service-Learning and Heidi Huff (Lib-lady Heidi Huff) has added the role of service-learning coordinator to her campus responsibilities.  In addition to offering support for courses with service-learning components, we’re placing Experiential Learning Scholars (ELS) in the community.  ELS partner with community organizations focusing on several kinds of literacy, including reading, financial, health, and civic responsibility. Here are the ELS partnerships for the summer, thus far: ELS Kesla Klingler will be preparing awesome literacy activities for Girls, Inc. of Wayne County.  These activities may include Connections Kits—available from the Campus Library, complete with themed books and projects.  … Continued

Shakespeare wrote, “that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”  After completing their diversity research the 8th graders from Early College Prep Academy might disagree.  As part of the “Unpacking Your Diversity” Bridgeway project, facilitated by a partnership among Early College at the Richmond Schools, Ivy Tech, and the IU East Campus Library, 8th grade students from ECPA learned what diversity meant for themselves and for others.  The Bridgeway project is intended to prepare students to transition into the Early College Academy at Richmond High School and later onto college.  Dr. Jackie Schlichte (Early College Director) and Heidi Huff (IU East Library Instruction Coordinator) worked with 8th graders during the month of April to … Continued
