Every April since 1996, the US has celebrated National Poetry Month.  While the Academy of American Poets has developed a 30-day list of activities, the IU East Campus Library has resources and databases to help students, staff and faculty observe year ‘round.  To kick things off this year, the Library is hosting a drop-in poetry activity on Thursday, April 13 from 12:30 to 1:30 PM. This summer, the Campus Library is celebrating more than a decade of collaboration with Every Child Can Read, for The Reading Academy (TRA) program (formerly Third Grade Academy). We invite IU East students, faculty and staff to be involved assisting with fun learning activities throughout June. Even 30 minutes would be a great help. Youth will be on campus 8 am – 2 pm Monday through Friday for reading enrichment with certified teachers, and we provide special projects, such as arts, culture, games, health, science, and writing. Films can be a useful resource for a variety of research. Several of the IU East Campus Library databases provide videos for educational purposes. Be sure to “Like” the IU East Campus Library Facebook page for weekly features of unique resources such as the following highlights which can all be located via our A-Z Index. Explore Education in Videos for reliable resources of more than 1,650 hours of videos that provide the opportunity to observe behaviors that define effective teaching styles. Included are demonstrations, lectures, documentaries, and primary-source footage of students and teachers in actual classrooms. March 25th is Earth Hour, a global program sponsored by World Wildlife Fund for Nature to help the environment.  The challenge is simple – give one hour of your time for the planet.  You can spend the sixty minutes doing anything positive for the environment – pick up trash, plant a tree, or turn off all your lights and electric devices.  It is a good time to be thoughtful and intentional about ecological problems and their solutions.  Earth Hour offers a number of teaching and learning tools on their website, as well. March 13th-19th is Brain Awareness Week, an opportunity to learn more about the human brain – its biology, its development and function, health and disorders, and current research into this incredible organ.  It is also a time for compassion and understanding for people who have suffered problems like Parkinson’s disease, stroke, epilepsy, and traumatic injury to the brain.  Ongoing research into brain health has pushed back the boundaries of insight into neurological disease and impairment, improving treatment options and lifelong health.  In partnership with the Dana Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and over forty countries work to promote brain education.  The official Brain Awareness Week website includes numerous resources – from games to information sheets to K-12 lesson plans … Continued
