Immigration

Immigration

Immigration around the world is in the news, on our TVs and social media, and in the discussions of world leaders and ordinary citizens. It is part of politics and daily life for most Americans and it is an IU East Campus topic theme for Fall semester 2017. What are the facts, the issues, and the opinions? The Campus Library has a resource for you to find out about Immigration. The purpose of the LibGuide is to provide reliable, factual, and editorial information about Immigration in the United States.  Consider the last 600 years; unless you are Native American from the American Continents, you are of immigrant heritage. European settlers began a migration soon after Columbus landed on an island … Continued
Constitution Day

Constitution Day

Sunday was Constitution Day (sometimes called Citizenship Day), marking the anniversary in 1787, when 39 delegates in Independence Hall in Philadelphia signed the Constitution, bringing our form of representative democracy into being. It’s worth noting that, while our founders described the equality of “we the people” as being “self-evident”, in 1787 it was actually an open question. No similar government had ever yet succeeded. But because ours did, it has become a model for all similar governments founded since. Studying this historic document is a privilege of citizenship, and IU East is offering plenty of opportunities for doing just that. On Wednesday, September 20th, from 11 am to 2 pm in the lobby of Springwood Hall, there will be contests … Continued

The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf: An introduction

The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf: An introduction

This year’s One Book selection, The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf, first came to IU East as one of the books that the library acquired as a result of the Next Indiana Bookshelf. The Next Indiana Bookshelf was a Bicentennial Legacy project from 2015 that gave Indiana-themed books to selected libraries throughout the state as a means to promote state history and pride. This selection was chosen because of its strong ties to Indiana, its theme and its connection with other on-campus theme activities. The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf layers multiple issues into one fulfilling, ultimately uplifting narrative. This book follows the life of Khadra Shamy, whose parents and brother immigrated to the United States from Syria when she … Continued
Summer of service

Summer of service

As we settle into Fall, we pause to reflect on Summer 2017 – a summer of service. June and July were full of programs in the IU East Campus Library and Center for Service Learning that connected IU East students as mentors for K-12 youth in our community. The enriching and fun learning activities included Math Counts! tutoring, Third Grade Academy and Herstory Camp. Math Counts! So many dedicated students were involved in tutoring this summer! Ann Tobin, campus/community liaison for service-learning, has profiled several of them. The Math Counts! program is generously supported by grants from the IU East Chancellor’s Innovation Fund, the Stamm Koechlein Family Foundation and the Indiana Kids program. Special thanks to tutoring coordinators Katelyn Brown … Continued
