In research, it is always a good idea to examine the primary sources, and not trust another author to act as an intermediary.  Firsthand, contemporaneous accounts of anything that happens – a historic event, a scientific experiment, the minutia of day-to-day life – are irreplaceable for historians decades or even centuries later.  Their existence allows later researchers to strip away the layers of exaggeration, dimming memory, hagiography, or demonization that can build up on stories told and retold over time.  Primary sources are those created by the participants in the events that are described.  These can be diaries and journals, letters and legal contracts, even blogs and emails. Pride Month, a significant cultural and social event that is celebrated in June, serves as a powerful testament to the ongoing fight for LGBTQ+ rights and recognition. We at the IU East Campus Library support all members of the LGBTQ+ community and offer resources on LGBTQ+ issues and topics. The IU East Library LGBTQ resource guide provides informative resources for LGBTQ students, families, and allies through links to various education-based, youth-specific, and political organizations resources. New Canvas Library Tool Available – ProQuest Resources

The IU East Campus Library is now offering a new tool to embed journal articles and other resources directly into Canvas from our database search engine, ProQuest Central. This is a similar tool to the Library Resources application that we launched in Fall of 2022, which allows faculty to search and embed articles from EBSCO Discovery directly into Canvas from the Module level. Faculty can now search and pull article links that are available from our ProQuest databases, for which we subscribe to over 80, into their Canvas course! March 13th-19th is Brain Awareness Week, an opportunity to learn more about the human brain – its biology, its development and function, health and disorders, and current research into this incredible organ.  It is also a time for compassion and understanding for people who have suffered problems like Parkinson’s disease, stroke, epilepsy, and traumatic injury to the brain.  Ongoing research into brain health has pushed back the boundaries of insight into neurological disease and impairment, improving treatment options and lifelong health.  In partnership with the Dana Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and over forty countries work to promote brain education.  The official Brain Awareness Week website includes numerous resources – from games to information sheets to K-12 lesson plans … Continued

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was signed by United Nations members on December 10, 1948 (a day that is now celebrated as Human Rights Day).  Eleanor Roosevelt, the chairwoman of the UN committee that drafted the document, referred to it as humanity’s Magna Carta.  In the wake of the atrocities committed in World War II, there was a strong need to formally define rights in a manner that all nations would understand them in the same way.  The document was based around four core freedoms: freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from fear, and freedom from want.  In 30 articles, the UDHR spells out individual rights and freedoms to dignity, liberty, and equality, including listing recommended remedies … Continued
