IU Bicentennial intern documents IU East history of community engagement

The IU Office of the Bicentennial supports initiatives to document the history of all IU campuses. During the Spring 2018 semester, IU Bicentennial intern Maureen Girdler is researching the History of Community Engagement at the IU East campus. Maureen is an online student majoring in Communications, who will graduate in May 2018.  She is collaborating on the project with IU East archivist Beth South and library director Frances Yates. To accomplish the task of learning about the variety and extent of more than 40 years of community engagement, Maureen is interviewing students, alumni, faculty and staff. This past semester, the archives has been very busy. We have a few ongoing projects, some new collections in the works, and a few updates. First, some ongoing projects… Bicentennial Oral History Project The Bicentennial Oral History Project is still happening! Oral History Assistant Ashley Clayton started with us this past August, contacting alumni and conducting interviews. This semester, Ashley interviewed 14 alumni, staff, and even a few faculty members, such as retired nursing professor Jane Vincent and current Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs T.J. Rivard. We also have online student Jennifer Haught, who started in October as our second Oral History Assistant, and she has been helping us with transcribing our interviews. What’s Happening in the Indiana University East Archives?

The IU East Archives is busy these days with various projects related to the IU Bicentennial. The archives is working to not only expand and improve its collections, but help the IU East campus stand out as well. Here are some projects that the IU East Archives is currently working on. Applying for an Indiana State Historical Marker With the help of the Office of the Bicentennial in Bloomington, all of the IU campuses are applying for an Indiana State Historical Marker. This year, the IU East campus, along with South Bend and IUPUI, is applying for a marker and, if approved, will have a marker installed on campus in 2018. Most recently we have been able to interview Denice Honaker, David Markley, Kara Bellew, Doris Phelps, Kimberly Schwartzel, Kraig Rose, and Rachel Rose. The IU East Archives- Exploring and Preserving the Campus’ History

The campus archives is doing a lot to prepare for IU’s Bicentennial in 2020 and for IU East’s 50th anniversary in 2021. We have the Bicentennial Oral History project, a campus wide endeavor to collect stories from IU alumni across all the campuses, happening now and the stories we collect here at East are vital to preserving the history and culture of IU East.
