The Reading Academy 2023: Highlights and Reflections

Library time The Campus Library has been actively involved with The Reading Academy (TRA) since 2010. This year IU East hosted 120 students in grades 2 and 3. They received intensive reading enrichment from teachers and learning assistants from the Richmond Community Schools, and participated in numerous special activities offered by IU East staff, faculty and students. This engaging reading program is funded and administered by Every Child Can Read. Perhaps the best part of TRA for the library team is – no surprise – their library visits to select books. Summer of Reading – please join us!

This summer, the Campus Library is celebrating more than a decade of collaboration with Every Child Can Read, for The Reading Academy (TRA) program (formerly Third Grade Academy). We invite IU East students, faculty and staff to be involved assisting with fun learning activities throughout June. Even 30 minutes would be a great help. Youth will be on campus 8 am – 2 pm Monday through Friday for reading enrichment with certified teachers, and we provide special projects, such as arts, culture, games, health, science, and writing. Since 2009, IU East has been a site for 20-30 students in grade three, with the Campus Library hosting daily activities. That continued until last year, when TRA came together at IU East … Continued

Celebrating Reading: The Reading Academy at IU East

Reading is essential for learning, and reading success in third grade creates a strong foundation for building future knowledge. The Children’s Reading Foundation “encourages school districts and communities to adopt a 90 percent reading goal. This goal means 90 percent of third graders will read on or above grade level by the end of the school year. By adopting this goal, illiteracy can be eliminated.” Locally, the Every Child Can Read (ECCR) organization, in partnership with the Richmond Community Schools and community supporters, provides a summer reading program that serves more than 150 students who benefit from added reading instruction and literacy enrichment. Connecting with children to create a culture of college

Promise Indiana is a program that “helps families and communities to support youth through saving for future education, participating in college and career activities in the classroom, and experiencing a college campus.” As an active participant in the program, Randolph County Schools provides students with experiences that help them visualize a future that includes education after high school graduation. This year IU East welcomed more than 200 third grade students to explore the campus. More than 30 faculty, staff and college students, along with more than a dozen campus volunteers, facilitated 52 interactive learning sessions with content ranging from anatomy and accounting to teamwork and solving mysteries. In January, Family READ celebrates creativity. We Read. Explore. Ask. Discover! creativity through the arts and also with innovative thinking. READ is an initiative of the IU East Campus Library. We encourage families to read, explore, ask and discover together and we have curated a resource guide featuring recommended books and learning activities. The Indiana University Women’s Philanthropy Leadership Council provided funding support to purchase interesting and engaging non-fiction books for youth.
