June is the 50th anniversary of National LGBTQ Pride Month, originally organized by the ‘Mother of Pride’ Brenda Howard, who first scheduled it in 1970 to commemorate the Stonewall demonstrations the previous year.  While it is painful this year to have so many public celebrations of LGBTQ identity curtailed or cancelled for health reasons, a movement so dedicated to the incredible diversity in how people come together and love each other cannot truly be kept apart. Awareness and Celebration of LGBTQ+ Community

International Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV) is March 31st, 2020. It is a day to celebrate transgender people, their contributions to society, as well as raise awareness of the discrimination they face worldwide. The Indiana University East Campus Library is a dedicated Safe Space and our librarians and staff participate in regular training and professional development, such as Safe Zone, to better serve those members of the community who identify as LGBTQ+. This past month, IU East librarians Beth South and KT Lowe had the opportunity to attend the National Association of Social Workers 3rd Annual Conference on Serving Sexual & Gender Minority (GSM) populations. In January, Family READ celebrates creativity. We Read. Explore. Ask. Discover! creativity through the arts and also with innovative thinking. READ is an initiative of the IU East Campus Library. We encourage families to read, explore, ask and discover together and we have curated a resource guide featuring recommended books and learning activities. The Indiana University Women’s Philanthropy Leadership Council provided funding support to purchase interesting and engaging non-fiction books for youth. As the IU East R.E.A.D. (Read. Explore. Ask. Discover!) program continues through November, we highlight awareness and advocacy for women in technology, Native Americans, and careers in science, technology, math, and art. We share inspiring stories in memoirs and explore a diversity of role models and mentors. An online resource guide includes book descriptions, learning links, and activity ideas. With generous funding support from the Indiana University Women’s Philanthropy Leadership Circle we have been able to purchase non-fiction books for youth that introduce us to new people, places and ideas. More than 300 non-fiction youth books are being added to the IU East Campus Library collection, thanks to the generosity of the Indiana University Women’s Philanthropy Leadership Council. The Family R.E.A.D. program is designed to Read, Explore, Ask, and Discover a variety of ideas, perspectives and content available through a wide range of books. Saturday, September 14, from 10-11:30 a.m. at the IU East Campus Library, families can participate in discovery centers that feature the themes of going to college, healthy eating and fitness, and Hispanic Heritage. IU East students, faculty and staff will be hosting fun learning stations that include games, dancing, food, crafts and more.
