We are still in the beginning of the summer season, and we have already experienced record numbers of high heat in many parts of the United States. Globally, scientists warn that 2023 could be one of the hottest years on record due to the impact of global warming and an incoming El Niño (Paddison, 2023). An El Niño is a natural weather phenomenon that occurs in the Pacific Ocean every few years that brings warmer than average sea waters temperatures to the surface and which can globally influence the weather. The Reading Academy 2023: Highlights and Reflections

Library time The Campus Library has been actively involved with The Reading Academy (TRA) since 2010. This year IU East hosted 120 students in grades 2 and 3. They received intensive reading enrichment from teachers and learning assistants from the Richmond Community Schools, and participated in numerous special activities offered by IU East staff, faculty and students. This engaging reading program is funded and administered by Every Child Can Read. Perhaps the best part of TRA for the library team is – no surprise – their library visits to select books. Graduates of IU East have learned a lot in their coursework about media literacy, critical thinking, and how to select and evaluate the best sources. Those skills can be applied anywhere – from television programs and newspapers to social media postings. Trustworthy, vetted content may seem more difficult to find after college. The free web is full of unsubstantiated opinion, bot-generated drivel, vacuous and repetitive fluff, and outright manipulation. Fortunately, resources that the library has curated, such as the Fake News libguide, remain available to graduates for guidance. For residents of Indiana, the main source of vetted, academic databases is Inspire, offered by the State Library. Anyone with an Indiana IP address can access dozens of databases freely. Throughout the 2018-19 academic year, we’ll be celebrating the many individuals in the Campus Library and Center for Service-Learning who do so much to contribute to student success and create an inclusive and welcoming experience for all students. This week’s blog features Ann Tobin, our campus/community liaison for the Center for Service-Learning. Ann creates community connections by engaging IU East students in service for course requirements, work study, career exploration, volunteerism, special projects, tutoring/mentoring, graduate school applications, and personal enrichment. Spotlight on Service: School of Nursing

The School of Nursing has long been active in service learning. This past fall, students in Curtis and Jennifer Bow’s Alternatives in Neuropsychology Practicum and Health of the Community Practicum courses contributed 85 hours of service in New York city, Washington DC, Belize and Eaton, OH, leading to a remarkable total of 94,184 interactions. To gain such an impressive number, they served meals, offered health advice, led education sessions and provided flu shots and vitamins. All of the service projects involved were connected with various neighborhood and community organizations who clearly benefited from the assistance of IU East students.
