International Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV) is March 31st, 2020. It is a day to celebrate transgender people, their contributions to society, as well as raise awareness of the discrimination they face worldwide. The Indiana University East Campus Library is a dedicated Safe Space and our librarians and staff participate in regular training and professional development, such as Safe Zone, to better serve those members of the community who identify as LGBTQ+. This past month, IU East librarians Beth South and KT Lowe had the opportunity to attend the National Association of Social Workers 3rd Annual Conference on Serving Sexual & Gender Minority (GSM) populations. IU East is committed to diversity and inclusion and funding is available to support learning and professional development.  Recently, the IU East Diversity Fund provided financial resources so two faculty and five students could attend the Indiana University Latino Expo. Business faculty Dr. Jaynne Rivas and business major Eric Mejia shared their conference experiences, which are excerpted below. The Women of IU Conference offered an opportunity to learn, share, and network. The goal for equality of males and females necessitates social, legal, and practical changes. The recent #METOO movement offers a renewed approach for improvement, for conversations, for expressions of pent-up feelings of frustration at the still unequal world. The Women of IU Conference offered a way to rethink and consider new avenues of action, good ideas for mentoring relationships, wise women’s words, and positive reinforcement. The conference keynote speakers and break-out sessions online presentations and messages provide access to a broader audience to experience the shared ideas. Beth South is Coordinator of Campus Library User Services and Archivist at Indiana University East. This past week, I had the opportunity to attend the Library Management Skills Institute in Bloomington, IN, sponsored by the Association of Research Libraries and Indiana University Bloomington Libraries. It was an intensive and engaging three-day workshop, led by consultant DeEtta Jones. Participants included librarians in varied positions at different libraries and at various stages in our careers, but we all shared similar concerns and issues. Whether we have been managers for years, in a new position, or have yet to enter a management position, we were all looking for ways to prepare ourselves for these leadership roles, or to perform better in these roles. … Continued
