Upcoming Discussion: Politics of Monuments and Memory After Charlottesville

Professors Kristoffer Rees, Chera LaForge and E. Scott Lee will lead a roundtable discussion on Confederate monuments on Thursday, February 22nd at Morrisson-Reeves Library. The event starts at 6:30 PM and is free and open to the public. Dr. Rees earned his Ph. D in Political Science and Central Eurasian Studies, while Dr. LaForge’s research focuses on the understanding of historical figures in contemporary political contexts and Dr. Lee’s interests hone in on collaborative decision and policy making, especially for intractable public problems Dr. Rees, whose academic research normally focuses on the former Soviet Union, saw distinct connections between the use of memorials in both the US and in Central Asia. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness of the peril of sexual violence. This year’s theme is engaging new voices to change the culture. Here at IU East, we are holding SAAM events all through the month, including the Clothesline Project, where you can decorate a t-shirt in support of survivors, a Take Back the Night rally, a poetry slam, emergency training, and lots more, sponsored by IU East’s Title IX Office. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a time to rededicate ourselves to protecting all members of our community. This year, the focus is on the ways individuals and communities can take action to promote safety, respect, and equality. IU East is holding events all month – programs include the Clothesline Project from 11-1 each day this week, where students are encouraged to write a message regarding sexual assault awareness. Also this week, on Wednesday from 12-4, Operation Street Smart will provide information on narcotics, including trends, terminology, concealment techniques, and their physiological effects. “I have been so busy asking for faith that I forgot to ask for patience.” ~ Marjorie Agosin, I lived on Butterfly Hill Latino Americans: 500 Years of History continues at IU East On Oct. 12-13, with a visit from award-winning author and activist Marjorie Agosin. Agosin is the winner of the Pura Belpré award for her young adult novel I Lived on Butterfly Hill. The book reflects her experience as a child during the severe political turmoil in Chile. Agosin is the author of numerous books, including these that are available in the IU East Campus Library: Amigas, A Cross and a Star, Landscapes of a New Land, Stitching Resistance, and Women, Gender, and Human Rights.
