Domestic Violence Awareness Month, observed every October, serves as a powerful reminder of the urgent need to address one of society’s less talked about issues. This month-long campaign promotes awareness about domestic violence, providing a platform for survivors, advocates, and communities to come together and raise their voices against abuse. The IU East Campus Library has many resources, including the Domestic & Sexual Assault Violence Resource Guide to help you learn about domestic and sexual assault and resources available to help those who have been affected. November 20th, the Transgender Day of Remembrance, was instituted in 1999 as a memorial – a time to remember those hurt or killed, particularly in the past twelve months, by transphobic violence. However, in recent years, it has shifted into a day of action – a time to look for ways to create a positive difference for trans people. Transgender people are often misunderstood – sometimes even by others in the LGBT community. A transgender person is simply someone whose self-identity or means of gender expression don’t match their sex assignment at birth. The Women of IU Conference offered an opportunity to learn, share, and network. The goal for equality of males and females necessitates social, legal, and practical changes. The recent #METOO movement offers a renewed approach for improvement, for conversations, for expressions of pent-up feelings of frustration at the still unequal world. The Women of IU Conference offered a way to rethink and consider new avenues of action, good ideas for mentoring relationships, wise women’s words, and positive reinforcement. The conference keynote speakers and break-out sessions online presentations and messages provide access to a broader audience to experience the shared ideas.
