Uncovering the Past: Creating Digital Timelines for the Lives of Amazing Women from History

Over the past few months, I have developed several interactive digital timelines for the Women of Valor: Interfaith Actions for Social Justice project. These women were some of the many featured in the 2017 Herstory Camp. Click the links of the various women below, organized by their activism and time period, for more information on their lives, advocacy, and work. Countless women were important advocates for equal education and abolition during the mid-19th century. African-American women in particular, both freed and enslaved, fought for their rights but were often lost to written history. The IU Office of the Bicentennial supports initiatives to document the history of all IU campuses. During the Spring 2018 semester, IU Bicentennial intern Maureen Girdler is researching the History of Community Engagement at the IU East campus. Maureen is an online student majoring in Communications, who will graduate in May 2018. She is collaborating on the project with IU East archivist Beth South and library director Frances Yates. To accomplish the task of learning about the variety and extent of more than 40 years of community engagement, Maureen is interviewing students, alumni, faculty and staff. I still remember the day that I fell in love with museums. I was twelve years old and it was at The Milwaukee Public Museum in Wisconsin, my home state. I had always been a history lover, and for the longest time I wanted to be a Paleontologist. As I grew older, I came to favor ancient and medieval world history, which is what I am majoring in. I have done a lot of reading and studying over my lifetime, and I have had the amazing opportunity to go to Egypt to study my love for history first hand. For Fall 2013 IU East is fortunate to have not 1, not 2, but 3 (!) graduate library interns from the American Library Association accredited graduate library school at San Jose State University. We appreciate the opportunity to have these students contribute their ideas and talents to projects that will benefit the campus and community. Robin Kokemore Rangel is working on an “Art Around the World” project. She will research authentic art from several countries and contribute to a resource guide that includes art samples, information about the country and culture, and ideas for art projects that represent the culture and artistic style.
