Archives Update: New Projects, New Faces

To celebrate the IU Bicentennial we wanted to share some exciting updates about both on-going and new IU East Archives projects! Media Collections Online First, all the audio-visual material that was housed in the archives and sent to Bloomington for the Media Digitization and Preservation Initiative (MDPI Project) are now back and they have been digitized. We are working on moving them into IU’s Media Collection Online (MCO), which is the campus wide platform for all of IU’s digitized AV material. We are building collections and pushing them from Dark Avalon, which is a read-only, restricted access site to MCO. Red Wolves Write!

To celebrate student writing in all its forms across the curriculum, IU East hosted its second annual Student Writing Day, on April 10, 2019. With posters, presentations, infographics and more, students from English, criminal justice, nursing and other fields presented the best of their written work. Coordinated by English Assistant Professor and Writing Program Director Travis Rountree, Student Writing Day also included activities and advice. The Writing Center was staffed and ready with schedules and knowledgeable students. The IU East Campus Library staff offered literary games, which included ekphrastic poetry exercises and a narrative drawing game involving prompts and ingenuity. A total of 12 poems and 21 drawings were produced, with insights on cats, books, bubbles and butterflies. Students from … Continued

Social justice is a concept of fairness between the individual and society. It can be explicit or implicit. It includes issues of economics (e.g., distribution of wealth), health (e.g., availability of affordable health care), educational opportunities, gender equality, freedom from persecution based on sexual orientation, and more. One may ask, “Well, what can I do to help alleviate social injustice? I’m only one person.” There are many individuals who have had positive impacts for societal change; perhaps some of them can be inspirational for one to take action in one’s own way. Transgender Support

November 20th, the Transgender Day of Remembrance, was instituted in 1999 as a memorial – a time to remember those hurt or killed, particularly in the past twelve months, by transphobic violence. However, in recent years, it has shifted into a day of action – a time to look for ways to create a positive difference for trans people. Transgender people are often misunderstood – sometimes even by others in the LGBT community. A transgender person is simply someone whose self-identity or means of gender expression don’t match their sex assignment at birth. Integrating and Creating Archives: My Experience with the Primary Source Immersion Program

Dr. Rountree shares his experience at the Indiana University Libraries’ Primary Source Immersion program. As I sat there next to Kurt Vonnegut’s Breakfast of Champions typed manuscript with his editor’s marks all over it, I knew that I was somewhere special. For a bibliophile like myself, it was amazing to be in the same room as this manuscript, Shakespeare’s folios, and other historical artifacts in the Lilly Library Archives. The Lilly was one of several archives that I visited and talked about at the Primary Source Immersion Program on the Indiana University Bloomington campus.
