Agosin is the winner of the Pura Belpré award for her young adult novel I Lived on Butterfly Hill. The book reflects her experience as a child during the severe political turmoil in Chile. The One Book, Many Voices program here at IU East continues this year with Positive by Paige Rawl. As a student and employee here at IU East, I am very excited for everyone to get the chance to read this important book, meet the author, share personal stories, etc. Not only is the story riveting, but it also has powerful messages that can be taken away by people of all ages and situations. Paige is an Indiana native and current college student, so students can definitely relate to her story, as well as anyone else who reads the book. We continue our Center for Service-Learning (CSL) student profiles series with Jason Farmer, a sophomore at IU East. He is originally from Dunkirk in Jay County, Indiana. Jason is currently majoring in Psychology. He says of his future plans: “Nothing is set in solid because the future is not stone,” but he would love to work in the psychology field within the military as of right now. As a CSL student staff member, Jason works at Friends Fellowship Community, an assisted living facility, and at the Fairview Boys & Girls Club. Shyanna Pasay: a perfect fit for service

Service-learning continues to grow at IU East, and we are fortunate to have many students dedicated to service work. Shyanna Pasay is a new student staff member in the Center for Service-learning (CSL). In her second semester at IU East, Shyanna is majoring in Psychology with the goal of becoming a Child Life Specialist working at Riley Hospital in Indianapolis. She is originally from Greenfield, Indiana, which is about 50 miles from Richmond. Shyanna worked at the Boys and Girls Club in Greenfield for two years while in high school. She has always enjoyed being involved in her community and is very passionate about working with children, so she says her work here will be “a perfect fit.” Her favorite … Continued

“Hanukah is a holiday of light, and everyone should have light…it’s a chance to take goodness and lightness to make the world a better place.” ~ Chabad Rabbi Yossi Greenberg On December 2, 2014, Jewish culture was celebrated with a special meal served in the Den at Indiana University East, and the playing of the Hanukah dreidel game. Hanukah begins the evening of Dec. 16 and lasts for 8 nights. Rabbi Yossi Greenberg, the Chabad Rabbi at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio was present to answer any questions about the meal, Hanukah or Jewish traditions in general.
