This year’s One Book Day is Wednesday, October 24th.  The featured book, This Far by Faith, discusses a wide range of social and health-related issues in Detroit, such as poverty, joblessness, mental illness and homelessness.  The Reverend Faith Fowler, pastor of the Cass Community United Methodist Church, wrote This Far by Faith to humanize the people who use the services offered by the Cass Community Church and its associated services.  To celebrate This Far by Faith, IU East has scheduled an entire day of events coinciding with the book’s themes. This year’s One Book selection, The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf, first came to IU East as one of the books that the library acquired as a result of the Next Indiana Bookshelf. The Next Indiana Bookshelf was a Bicentennial Legacy project from 2015 that gave Indiana-themed books to selected libraries throughout the state as a means to promote state history and pride. This selection was chosen because of its strong ties to Indiana, its theme and its connection with other on-campus theme activities. The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf layers multiple issues into one fulfilling, ultimately uplifting narrative. Annually since 2012, IU East selects a book that connects the campus and community in reading, study, and service.  This year’s One Book selection, A Chance in the World by Steve Pemberton, has themes that intersect identity, family, child welfare, community, culture, education, and more.  On Tuesday, October 25, IU East will host a day of activities which enhance connections between campus and the community, with a focus on the themes in Pemberton’s book.
