The Reading Academy 2023:  Highlights and Reflections

The Reading Academy 2023:  Highlights and Reflections

Library time The Campus Library has been actively involved with The Reading Academy (TRA) since 2010. This year IU East hosted 120 students in grades 2 and 3. They received intensive reading enrichment from teachers and learning assistants from the Richmond Community Schools, and participated in numerous special activities offered by IU East staff, faculty and students. This engaging reading program is funded and administered by Every Child Can Read. Perhaps the best part of TRA for the library team is – no surprise – their library visits to select books. So many students rushed to the juvenile bookstacks, eager to browse and discover books that interested them.  There was lots of reading independently and also many eager to share … Continued

Ann Tobin: Campus/Community Liaison for the Center for Service-Learning (CSL)

Throughout the 2018-19 academic year, we’ll be celebrating the many individuals in the Campus Library and Center for Service-Learning who do so much to contribute to student success and create an inclusive and welcoming experience for all students. This week’s blog features Ann Tobin, our campus/community liaison for the Center for Service-Learning. Ann creates community connections by engaging IU East students in service for course requirements, work study, career exploration, volunteerism, special projects, tutoring/mentoring, graduate school applications, and personal enrichment. She explains, “It’s all about relationships –those with the community partners and with the IU East students.” Answering needs of community organizations is a top priority, and many partners contact CSL with a need for service students. Answering the needs … Continued

Every year, the IU East Campus Library, as part of its commitment to the Early College program, assists 8th grade students at Hibberd Intermediate School in Richmond, Indiana on a yearlong diversity-oriented research project. This year, the class focused on community development through a civic planning project. Students combined independent research with advice and knowledge from city leaders and experts to develop plans for a better, stronger community. City of Richmond officials came out in … Continued
Military Matters

Military Matters

We count ourselves lucky to have almost 200 veterans as part of our student body. The life experiences of veterans add immeasurably to the discussion in any classroom. We try to cultivate this relationship – we are frequently named as a military-friendly school, and as a member of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC) Consortium, we offer online Bachelors and Masters programs targeted to help mobile service-members to complete their degrees. And Purdue’s Military Family Research Institute offers similar services to students enrolled at the Purdue Technology program on our campus. In fact, our colleagues at Purdue are engaged in a project right now to honor our veterans, and you can help. The Purdue Student Veterans Organization has ‘adopted’ the 122nd … Continued
Calling All Heroes!

Calling All Heroes!

Service-Learning opportunities abound for the Fall Semester.  The Experiential Learning Scholars will soon be busy with our community partners.  Currently, the Center for Service Learning has IU East students mentoring in Richmond at the Boys & Girls Club of Wayne County, Girls, Inc. of Wayne County, and in Fountain City at Northeastern Elementary.  All that’s missing is YOU! The community organizations below are looking for individual IU East students, entire class projects, or club activities to help serve their outreach areas.  Beginning September 10th, Northeastern Elementary needs heroes, a.k.a tutors, for their Homework Heroes program on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00-4:15. Tutors in all subject areas are needed, put your expertise to use! On September 19th Ivy Tech and IU … Continued
